REGNO DEL CORNETTO CAFFÈ, VIA NOMENTANA 879, 00137 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid to lower end Roman coffee

The Regno del Cornetto Bar Caffè is a rather large locale, with a front patio that takes up quite a lot of the corner. It’s an odd street the Nomentana (in East Rome), the buildings are placed right in front of the street, almost as if you walk straight onto the busy avenue. The Regno del Cornetto, is yes, a bit of everything. And a bit more of a gambling area than anything else. They have a full betting station and tons of slot machines to the right when you come in. So you can imagine that they have a regular feed of customers in need of coffee to keep gambling through the night. Either way, the staff was very friendly, and I got first class service out here in the boonies of Rome.

This is what I got placed in front of me:

Presentation: Yup, a short fattish plumpy cup, rather large opening but not big. I got a very big cup of water served without me asking and it was clean. The spoon seemed to do its job fair enough, if it still looks to me like a 1930s relic.

Temperature of Cup: It was good. I think the cold weather influences my perception of cup temperatures!

Quantity: Full shot. Not short by Roman standards, but definitely not long by US’s standards either!

Temperature: It was also good, on the warm side, borderline I’d say.

Volume/Consistency: It was very silky but very light. It was thin, but not runny nor watery. It had a good consistency of a latte I’d say. Which is very nice.

Crema: It was uniform, very small globules and persistent. It seemed to add to the experience of the drink, it was very wet and looked like fresh paint.

Odor: Dark roasted coffee, I’ll take it!

Taste: It was decent. Very flat and not necessarily rancid or over the top bitter. It was simply a monochromatic bitter start and became dull immediately. It wasn’t poor, but simply not exciting. Kind of grey like the cold evening outside.

Overall: It was OK, a solid espresso that with a tad of sugar would have become immediately better. As it was it was mid to low-end Roman coffee.

The setup: They had a battle-tank La Cimbali espresso machine, and then a very nice Casadio grinder (envy!!), the coffee was Portioli Caffè, a Roman based roaster.
