Review of the Third Wave Coffee Event - Saturday 17, October, 2015

Saturday 17, October 2015 - Rome

This past 17 Saturday October a Third Wave event was hosted at the Monk Club by a consortium of coffee roasters, cafes and baristas. It lasted from tasting started at 5pm and a party from 9pm onwards finished the night. The consortium  putting this together is represented by the Community Coffee Research group. The directors of the event were Andrej Godina and Francesco Sanapo, two northern Italian based experts, and a slew of local Roman baristas and local roasters such as Marjani Coffee Roaster. The event also functions under the thematic rubric of: Io bevo caffè di qualità (I drink quality coffee), an Italian-wide movement promoting knowledge and improvement of coffee consumption.  It is apparently the first event of this nature hosted here in Rome, previous places were in Palermo and Lecce. Roasters providing the coffee for the event were the local Roman roaster Mondi Caffè and Sandalj Caffè, a Trieste based roaster, and decaff coffee by Demus, also a roaster from Trieste. The amazing coffee machine company Della Corte and Bunn were the equipment sponsors of the event. Della Corte put a gallery of images from the event here.

The space was divided in two areas, at the far end we had the espresso machine kicking out espressi by Mondicaffè (a special house blend), and then two varieties by Sandalj Caffè (India and Nepal single origin blends (see below for pix).

Then on the side, we had drip coffee tastings, of the same coffee, but also decaf. The was brewing via drip, aeropress, and siphon.

Besides drinking all the crazy free coffee you could have, there was an espresso tasting session where each different coffee blend was tasted and discussed in detail, and compared between each other. The idea was to educate the audience on the different brew temperatures, different types of coffees, and most importantly, the range of tastes available with each coffee.

The espresso machines on site were those by Della Corte, the beautiful EVO2, the grinders were also Della Corte. Man was this setup AMAZING!

Overall it was a great place to get to explore the new trends in Third Wave culture here in Italy. It’s a great initiative and it seemed like folks present were really captive to the idea of tasting coffee as something a little different than a pitch-black rancid drink to kickstart your morn’. I got to the event a bit late and couldn’t taste the espresso as there were just too many people sitting crowding around the machine, and then I had to take off. I did taste the drip coffee and they were decent. Not as fruity as I hoped, but still, not bad at all.

The positive? It is a really welcome start to changing local staunchly conservative coffee culture. The scope was tight with four different coffees being tasted, explored, and different brewing methods shown and tasted. There was tons of excitement there and it’s a really important first start.

For the future? More focus on the origin of beans, on the treatment of beans, and of course, a cupping session would have made this a great all around event to learn.

I’m really looking forward to the next events here in Rome!

Here’s a press release of the event by Della Corte, and another writeup in the La Repubblica.
