EBAR CAFFÈ, VIA MODENA 17, 00184 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-range Roman coffee

The Ebar Caffè sits north and parallel to the Via Nazionale, and if I’m not mistaken, in front of the downtown Roman office of the Questura, or whatever that police agency thinngy is. When I walked up to the bar, I think it was the owner’s son in law that was outside having a cigarette. I saw a woman with a crying baby come in and then move inside towards the interior and well, the guy and the barista owner guy seemed to be discussing that the little girl was too tired. Indeed, it was a winy sort of cry of just the type. Right behind me came in another regular customer that screamed out in a super fast manner three different complex coffees, and the barista said, ‘hold on a second’ and started to argue that he’s not a machine.

So I politely asked for my coffee and this is what I got:

Presentation: A brimming cup of fresh water was served, and also a nice chocolate covered coffee bean candy placed on the saucer. Very nice! The cup was clean, to the point and a design I don’t particularly dislike.

Temperature of Cup: It was warm, but good, it was towards the end of the day and the cups weren’t boiling. Meaning that things were brewed at a lower temp. Bravo!

Quantity: It was a good short shot.

Temperature: Very good as well.

Volume/Consistency: It was a bit thinner than I expected, but it had a sandy-soft chalklike texture that lacked oil, but wasn’t altogether bad. Almost like eating an icecream that has too much sugar in it.

Crema: It was a bit over extracted. Well almost about 2-3 seconds worth. But it was still very decent. Thick, persistent and added to the drink.

Odor: Deep dark charred coffee smell…

Taste: It was a medium punch in the mouth. It was bitter but not overwhelmingly so. It had a bit of a crescendo, and then went into the flat non-descript taste of dark roasted coffee. The finish didn’t give me any type of flavors, and was quite flat and simply bitter.

Overall: It was a low to mid range roman coffee. I’ve had a lot better from this brand that tends to have very oily thickish brews that I like, but this wasn’t one of them.

The setup: They had a vintage (by now!) Rancilio machine with a Rancilio grinder, the coffee was Moca Caffè, a Roman based roaster that I tend to like. It’s usually powerful but very rich and lush coffee.
