VERO CAFFÈ, PIAZZA VITTORIO EMANUELE II 1, 00185 ROMA

Rating: Standard, low-end Roman coffee

The Vero Caffè is right on the Vittorio Emanuele II metro station exit. It’s looking the large park and has tons of crazy and odd people coming in and out of it. From tourists, to stinky bums to lots of Chinese merchants that control the wholesale clothing trade in this part of town. It’s very lively and run by a duo- an older Roman woman and a slightly younger Roman barista that is very full of energy and jokes. When I walked in a homeless lady had just waked in and bought a pack of cigarettes and the barista excused himself as he said he couldn’t stand the stench. After she left he proceeded to fill the air with air freshner… hmm.. I do think the latter smelled worse! Either way, the guy was fun and had a good demeanor, so did the cashier who took pity on the homeless lady and didn’t make her pay the full amount of the pack of cigs.

This is what I got served:

Presentation: Like it, nice. Smaller cup. All in order, and a nice brimming cup of water came right up! I like the logo of this cup, and things are starting good.

Temperature of Cup: IT was warm but not scalding. Good.

Quantity: Very short shot. It was pas 6pm and I appreciated this.

Temperature: It was warmer than the cup itself, not scalding, but really warm, borderline. We’re getting into trouble here.

Volume/Consistency: It was very light, thin and not extracted well. It was simply so thin that it wasn’t very pleasing.

Crema: The crema started to die out almost immediately after the cup landed on the table. It was very bright, quite thick in its graininess and not very appealing. Didn’t add anything to the drink.

Odor: Dark dark roasted coffee smell.

Taste: It was a flat bitter towards rancid taste that then when kind of incognito with the rancid hint. It didn’t really get there, but simply wasn’t anything that you could push around in your mouth.

Overall: Although I had a great time in this bar laughing with the barista and the cashier, the coffee was simply a poor Roman espresso.

The setup: They had a very nice space-age looking San Marco espresso machine and a similar branded grinder. The coffee was Epifani Caffè (without a web presence), a Roman roaster that I’ve only tasted very sharp bitter coffee from. I’d like to give other places that serve this a try, I’m sure it can be shaped better than this.
