TRINITÀ CAFFÈ, VIA SISTINA 90, 00187 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-range Roman coffee

Along the Via Sistina, a street that unites the piazza Barberini and the Spanish steps, you’ll find the Trinità Caffè. It’s got all the old world charm and the exterior looks so Roman traditional that it looks straight out of a postcard. The interior was relaxed, the owner/cashier was reading a newspaper, and the barista, a young woman in her mid 20s was very attentive, and very polite. Service was excellent. The barista was listening to what I ordered at the cashier, and when I walked up to the bar, she confirmed if I wanted a regular coffee and I said ‘yup’.

This is what I got:

Presentation: Nice clean cup, a bit boxy for my tastes, but all in order. Water was given to me immediately and without asking, and things seemed to be off to a good start.

Temperature of Cup: It was good, warm, not too cold. Another positive point.

Quantity: It was a solid ounce, 30ml espresso. For being past 6pm, it was quite abundant, I usually get ristretto’s without asking in the evening. But nothing over the top either way.

Temperature: Warmer than the cup, but still not scalding. It was decent. At a low 90s… I’ve been lucky these past few days with lukewarm coffee. A positive thing!

Volume/Consistency: It was smooth, silky and decent oil in the brew.

Crema: It was like fresh paint, it was a mild brown color, not uber dark, and wasn’t over extracted, it was very good, and uniform. It was rather persistent and added to the drinking experience.

Odor: A warm dark roasted smell, not pungent, but rather warm, and not altogether nice!

Taste: Well, it started off a bit more tarty-pungent than I’d hoped for, and then plateaued at a dull bitterness that is so characteristic of Roman coffee. It didn’t go anywhere near rancidness and it was rather smooth in it’s finish. It was a silky bitter buttery finish, that was nice.

Overall: It was a very decent coffee. It was well executed and had a lot of body without rancidness. Very solidly middle of the road to upper Roman espresso.

The setup: Well, they had a workhorse Faema, with a Faema grinder. But get this, the coffee was Palombini Caffè! Yeah, the EUR area based roaster that delivers mouth numbing char-roasted coffee, was executed here in a very nice way! Bravo!!
