CAFFETTERIA IL BARETTO, PIAZZA SAN BERNARDO 101, 00185 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-range Roman coffee

The Caffetteria Il Baretto is a small locale on the Piazza San Bernardo, a bout two blocks north west of Termini. It’s got competition from the fancy Exquisitaly café eatery next door, and of course, the clientele that decides to sit in here is more laid back, relaxed and not as fufu as somebody going next door. And inside you’ll find really nice staff that is chill and jovial. Almost every client that walked in, apparently regulars, had a laugh when speaking to the baristas and owners of the locale. There are some tables inside and outside, and like most cafes doubles up as a lunch locale during noontime.

This is what I got:

Presentation: A familiar cup shape, a familiar logo, and nothing fancy going on here. The basics were covered, clean, spoon in order, and water was given to me without a wink after I asked.

Temperature of Cup: Hey, good temp!

Quantity: Short, in this rather small cup already.

Temperature: Yup, also decent. So far we’re doing great in this unassuming café.

Volume/Consistency: It was smooth, silky, rich, not very heavy.

Crema: It was persistent, a bit over extracted and had a bright spot in it showing this. It was so persistent that I feel it definitely added to the consistency of the drink.

Odor: Nothing there, nothing to report.

Taste: It was bitter, but not over the top. There was a sharp start, moving to a flat bitterness, that then ended in a taste going towards rancidness, but not there.

Overall: It was a mid to low end Roman coffee, there wasn’t much oiliness to it, and quite flat in taste, had it been a bit better, richer, it would have been a different story.

The setup: They had a Faema E 78 with a vintage Casadio grinder. The coffee was Caffè Miami, a Rome based roaster that can perform way better than this. Some of the best espresso I’ve had here in Rome has been roasted by Miami, so that’s why this doesn’t get a better grade.
