NUOVO FARO CAFFÈ, VIA IN ARCIONE 78-79, 00187 ROMA

If you find yourself behind the Quirinale, and moving towards the Trevi Fountain, then you’ll probably pass by the Il Nuovo Faro Caffè. There’s tables outside, and lot’s of ‘m inside too. The place is a rather deep mono locale with a gargantuan bar on the right hand side. Behind it there where a couple of super hipster Italians, beard, tattoos and nice to boot.

This is what I got served:

Presentation: Yup, a nice new version of Palombini cups. I like them, fluted, slim and fresh. No water was given, but it was offered to others after they asked.

Temperature of Cup: It was warm, but OK.

Quantity: Fairly short shot, kept it small. Yeah, in the US or any other part of the world this would be ‘essence’ of espresso!

Temperature: It was warmer than the cup, and it was poor surprise to have this afternoon. Almost burnt my tongue.

Volume/Consistency: It was very thin, a wet, watery and not as thick as I would have liked in this size espresso shot.

Crema: Light brown, over extracted in my opinion. Or meaning, that not enough coffee was in the porta filter for this size shot. It was persistent and then after about 4 minutes it started to die out.

Odor: Nope, nothing at all coming out of this cup.

Taste: It was bitter, burnt taste, there was a charcoal like taste, earthy, humid almost. Let’s say it wasn’t very good.

Overall: It was a typical Palombini espresso for me. It had that sharp bitter thin taste to it that cuts deep through. Even with a heaping bag of sugar, you still have this bitter-rancid after taste kicking you in the arse…

The setup: They had a tank-like Faema E92, supplied with coffee form an Astoria black-clad grinder. The coffee was Caffè Palombini’s Oro Bar blend, this is a EUR based roaster that I’m not necessarily fond of.
