Rating: Standard, mid-range Neapolitan coffee
So after the famous Scartuchio Caffè I felt like hitting a normal run of the mill place. And as I was walking down a very famous avenue here in Naples, I ran into the L.u.i.s.e. Caffè. A mix of lunch bar café bar and what not. Typical café mix of Rome I’d say. Walking in, the local was very slender with some seating areas downstairs and upstairs. They also had a nice chunk of the piazza with lots of tables set out where folks were smoking their life and cares away.
This is what the barista served me at the counter inside the café:
Presentation: A small cup, bowl shaped, double thick, not the thickest I’ve had, but quite thicker than in Rome. Clad with a logo. OK, I can live with it. The spoon was to measure. Water was given in a plastic disposable cup. Yeah, more trash to fill up the streets of Naples!
Temperature of Cup: It was surprisingly not uber-warm. It was hot but not too hot.
Quantity: It was a short shot. Very ristretto.
Temperature: It was warm as well, but not boiling.
Volume/Consistency: Nice thick rich and silky, very smooth, very syrup like. I enjoyed the sludge in this cup!
Crema: Persistent. Dark, and just a bit of over extraction (if that’s possible in this short cup!).
Odor: Dark roasted smell of coffee.
Taste: It was a sharp acidic crescendo that brimmed with a deep bitterness that also gave me a shiver down my spine. I had to take a minute to try it at a smaller sip and then see what I could taste. It was pretty much a flat dark roasted taste that came through. It was very oily in content so that gave it a smoothness to it that I liked.
Overall: It was decent coffee, very pungent and strong and well… here nobody drinks their coffee straight, it’s always with a heaping spoonful of sugar. So that makes sense.
The setup: They had a San Marco lever machine, of course, and a grinder that I couldn’t see. The coffee was Caffè Greco. I asked and they confirmed as they also were serving Moreno Caffè, but the barista assured me that it was Greco being served. They’re a local Naples based roaster.
