OSTERIA DEL CURATO CAFFÈ, VIA FIRENZE 28, OO184 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-range Roman roasted coffee

Yes, you’ve read it right, the name of this café is Osteria del Curato Caffè. And no it is not an osteria. It’s a rinkidink small place with some tables outside and maybe, in some time in its past it had more floor space (like the corner tobacco shop area that is connected to it via in interior open door) it was an Osteria. But now it’s just a café. And when I walked in, I had to literally go all the way to the back and towards the end of the bar as there was no room in the interior. There were like 6 bodies, and little space already. It’s a dark late 70s interior with poor lighting, lots of stainless steel and black.

Either way, the barista was quick to spit out the following:

Presentation: Nice clean cup, a vintage looking logo. I like the shape of the cup, it leaves little wiggle room. And the spoon was of decent size. No water was served with the cup.

Temperature of Cup: Good enough.

Quantity: Short, very short. Extra great.

Temperature: Warm, good.

Volume/Consistency: It was rich, creamy, thickish, and full-bodied. I liked it!

Crema: It was like a brown version of the green marble countertop it was on. I liked it. It was definitely persistent, thick and lavish.

Odor: Dark daaaaark roasted coffee smell.

Taste: It was a bitter start, punchy, springy and a definite bitter punch to the mouth, but it was a soft blow and not that bad. There was a weird after taste of metal that I didn’t like, which reflects a dirty boiler in my opinion… it was almost astringent in quality.

Overall: Besides the dud-like finish, it was a great espresso. It was almost a meal in and of itself it was so rich. And mind that it was super short, a definite uber-ristretto by US terms. But it was a normal espresso in this place.

The setup: The espresso machine was a space age looking Nuova Simonelli, and the grinder a black clad Astoria. The coffee was Tahiti Caffè, a new one for me, and it’s a Roman-based roaster out in Municipio XIII (west of Aurelia). Judging by this coffee, it looks to be an excellent roaster of traditional Roman coffee, yet able to deliver a rich syrupy concoction that is not pure tar. I’ll have to look for other locales serving this!
