ANDRACCHIO CAFFÈ, VIA ALESSANDRO SEVERO 224, 00145 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid to low end Roman coffee

So right across the Italian ‘IRS’ (Agenzia delle Entrate) next to the Cristoforo Colombo avenue connecting downtown to EUR you have this café cum pastry shop that literally has no other name than ‘bar’. At least that’s what the receipt said. So this Andracchio Caffè is the name I’m giving it as it’s the owner’s name. Whatever, the place was stuck in the late 1970s. There were ample tables, the bar was at the back of the locale, and it looks like it’s a regular coffee and whatever else they can serve type of place. The barista was a guy in his 60s that seemed to be the owner, and the cashier his wife, also in the same age. Either way, the place was quiet, no tv, no radio, it was nice to walk into a large place, with complete silence in it. Very nice.

This is what I got as I stood at the counter of the café:

Presentation: Well the shape I like, it’s a shape that doesn’t allow much room for error in the size of the espresso. The logo was interesting. It was interesting. No water was served, the saucer and spoon were wet from being just washed.

Temperature of Cup: It was hot, damned hot!

Quantity: It was short, nice.

Temperature: Ouch… still super hot, what the heck!?

Volume/Consistency: It was a bit pasty, chalky, like there was a grip of coffee in the cup, like if I was drinking a turkish coffee.

Crema: It was persistent, thick, but as you can see it had frog eye bubbles in it.

Odor: Sharp darkly roasted coffee.

Taste: Hmm.. Ok let’s start. It was flat, and became monotone immediately after I started drinking, very bitter nearing rancid.

Overall: It simply wasn’t an exciting drink to consume. It was a mid to low end coffee experience.

The setup: The machine was a VBM Vibiemme tucked in between some stuff on the right hand side of the counter. I couldn’t see the grinder. The coffee is a new one for me, it said ‘Caffè Portoricos’. Looking this up on the net we get a East-Rome roaster situated off the Via Prenestrina in the Roma V area. It looks like a wholesale retailer, and I asked the barista if it was this or Circi Caffè (which was the name I saw on the outside facade) and he said, no it’s Portoricos… so interesting, yet another roaster here in Rome. From the likes of it, very dark roasts, as is expected here in Rome.
