NONAME CAFE, VIA SANTA CECILIA 1, 00153 ROMA

Rating: Standard, very good Roman coffee

I while ago, an actor from NYC contacted me about cafes here in Rome. I gave him and his girlfriend a short list of those I thought were great. On them, in Trastevere, was the Sciapò Caffè & Bistrot. But unfortunately it was Monday when he passed by and it was closed. But he told about this great place right across the street from it. And lo and behold, months later, and with my curiosity peaked, I walked into the Noname Café. It is a monolocale, long and deep, and kind of bohemian, if not a bit hipster. But it’s neither of that. It’s a bit eclectic in décor, but the whitewashed walls an the cool ‘real’ jazz music being played in the background made it hip, and well, I liked it as a place to sit down and hang out. It’s in a part of Trastevere that is really relaxed, and I just liked the place. It’s run by a motley group of folk of different ages, and that’s nice.

This is what I was served:

Presentation: Water was served immediately and without asking at the counter. I was a bit suspicious of the logo on the cup, I’m usually not too hot on this brand, but what the heck, the machine it was being squirted out from was amazing. See below!

Temperature of Cup: Great temperature, wow, amazing that this brand is coupled with a good temperature cup!

Quantity: It was a full rather large espresso for Roman styled drinks. If it was good, it was going to be doubly good.

Temperature: Ahh… excellent! Another very good point!

Volume/Consistency: Creamy, rich, full-bodied, silky, and oily at the same time. No chalkiness, no powderyness, none of that junk.

Crema: Was dark but not black, it had a very uniform sheen, not overextracted, and it was like wet paint, not tar-like, nor ultra oily. It was elastic and shapely.

Odor: Very smooth warm coffee smell, nothing charred here!

Taste: Here it is, very good. It started with a smooth elegant buttery taste opening up to a bitter mid taste. Smooth coffee, and finished with a nutty bite.

Overall: Very good coffee, by far some of the best Fantini roaster coffee I’ve had here in Rome. Usually this roaster is served boiling hot and rancid, none of that here - it was very good!

The setup: They had a beautiful Royal Espresso lever machine, very clean, very much in order, and by the taste of the coffee, regularly serviced. The water didn’t have any of the rancidness that accumulates in the boiler from the small amount of coffee that backflushes in there every time an espresso is pulled. The grinder was a Fiorenzato F6. Nice. The coffee was the Roman-based roaster Fantini Caffè.
