SO & SO CAFFETTERIA METRONIA, LARGO DELL'AMBA ARADAM 5, 00184 ROMA

Rating: Standard, low-end Roman coffee

Well, before I went to the Pausa Caffè, about an hour before, I came into this place, the So & So Caffetteria Metronia. It looks more like a pizzeria or something, as it’s got a large corner lot, lots of tables, and hindden directly across the entrance you have the bar and cashier. There you’ll find the typical trappings of being able to buy lottery tickets, cigarettes and of course, coffee for the fix. The place was operated by black-clad baristas, all male, all in their mid 20s by the looks of it. They were having fun joking around and being jovial with each other and with the regulars. They were very professional in serving me.

This is what I got:

Presentation: Yup, one of these cups. It’ll be a strong as hell espresso, just by the brand. Water was served immediately and without asking, as if knowing that I’d need a cup to wash this bitter pill down. The spoon was quite fun. Looks like a 1950s space age design or somethin’. I liked how it bent ¾ of the way and rested on the saucer so nicely. Besides that all in order. Clean cup, can’t complain!

Temperature of Cup: Suuuuper hot. Yup, that lasted for a second, I’m complaining…

Quantity: Short shot, nice. This is like espresso ‘essence’ in the USA…

Temperature: Yeah, I had to wait a good while. Fortunately I was able to kind of hug the cup between me and the phone, as the baristas were eyeing it to see if they could take it away. Hell, anybody standing at a counter with their cup of coffee for more than 2 minutes is considered ‘suspect’…

Volume/Consistency: It was thin, cutting, bitting, and sharp. Watery too, did I mention that?

Crema: It was thin, grainy in appearance, yes dark, and awkwardly persistent to my surprise.

Odor: Didn’t notice much of a sharp cutting bitter smell. So that’s better than what I just mentioned.

Taste: It was a sharp bitter start, thin and piercing as if to want to cut right through my tongue. It had a very spicy, tickly your nose type of punch that had a rancid aftertaste which I didn’t know if it was entirely in my mind or actually coming from the coffee.

Overall: It wasn’t exciting, it wasn’t full, it wasn’t imaginative, nor pleasant. It wasn’t a horrible experience, but rather simply a poor espresso.

The setup: The machine was a La Cimbali, the grinder a Mazzer, and the coffee is a Roman Based roaster Marziali Caffè. Typical in its very dark pungent taste.
