Rating: Standard, solid good mid-range Roman coffee
The Clodio Caffè is on the Piazzale Clodio, a busy and chaotic intersection of the north Vittoria neighborhood. It’s got a white travertine exterior, and for some reason, it reminded me of the Bologna Caffè on Piazza Bologna. It’s got a similar black on grey décor, same façade and staff. The two baristas who were working here seemed like friends or brothers they got along so well. Both quite tall, in their mid to late 30s, not overly tattooed and not overly suntanned. So they weren't the Roman-hipster, and seemed like two guys going about their life without paying attention to the fads of the day. Which for most Roman males, that seems hard. They were courteous, and were in constant conversation with the regulars who seemed to all want to crowd in right in front of the espresso machine with me:
The presentation:
Presentation: Very simple straight forward, all that you need. Gleaming white cup. 1980s logo design on the cup that isn’t too obstructive. All in order.
Temperature of Cup: It was good, not too hot.
Quantity: Very short, very happy camper.
Temperature: Good, amazing. It must be the first time that I get a Danesi coffee that’s not uber boiling hot!
Volume/Consistency: Smooth, rich, with substance, not runny, nor thin. Again, is this the first time I try a very good Danesi coffee?
Crema: It was dark, thin, but persistent. It added to the drinking experience, and was quite elastic with its oily film.
Odor: Dark dark roasted coffee, and ever so faint. Good!
Taste: It was slightly acidic up front. It was smooth, and began to increase in bitterness as I drank it. It wasn’t overly strong, nor pungent, and wasn’t rancid on any points. There was not complexity in taste and simply flat in it’s delivery of the standard ‘coffee’ taste.
Overall: What sounds like an ‘uninteresting’ coffee, is actually a very decent espresso for this brand. This coffee has been consistently very poor to my taste, simply because it’s uber-rancid and boiling hot. Here it wasn’t. Bravo!
The setup: And probably the reason is that these guys had their own setup. They a La Cimbali M34 espresso machine, with vintge-like La Cimbali grinders. The coffee is a Roman based roaster, Danesi Caffè that usually makes their clients buy their own branded espresso machine and get the setup honed in by them. And results are disastrous. Their coffee is usually burnt, and very rancid. Fortunately, here it wasn’t. And I got to taste something that wasn’t third wave coffee, but that was enjoyable and solid nonetheless.
