Rating: Standard, mid-range Lavazza coffee
On a sleepy corner facing away from the Circonvallazione Ostiense, near the Cristoforo Colombo avenue is the La Fenice Bar Garbatella Caffè. It’s one of these 1970s locales, with the composite particle marble floors, straightforward metal tables and an air of openness and just easiness about it. The places faces a weird parallel street of the Cric. Ostiense, and is right next to the ministry of the Environment, territory and ocean. I was expecting quite terrible coffee from this place, but instead I was surprised to get a normal, decent espresso. It seems the couple of thousand folks that work at this ministry like their coffee not so rancid as other ministry workers.

Let’s see what I got served:

Presentation: Clean cup, nice, no flashiness, if not something I’ve seen over and over. No water was offered, but right next to me there was a carafe with water and lemon in it, and plastic cups for you to serve yourself. Lovely.
Temperature of Cup: It was good, we’re off to a great start!
Quantity: It was short, not ristretto, not abundant. Another great point.
Temperature: It was slightly hotter than the cup, and that is good again. Not boiling, nothing funny here, just brewed at a good 91-92 C or thereabouts.
Volume/Consistency: It was light, a shimmer of oiliness hid behind the silkiness of the cup. I was hoping something a bit heavier, but nope. This was airy, and weightless. Not runny, nor dirty water.
Crema: It was light, persistent and welcomed itself into my mouth every time I took a sip.

Odor: None that I could ascertain.
Taste: Lightly bitter, no harsh bites, no punches. A bit nutty after the first sip and not too acidic either.

Overall: The taste profile from a Lavazza is pretty much flat coffee taste, but this was a decently executed normal espresso that is good on any weekday. Nothing spectacular, but definitely repeatable.
The setup: They had a nice workhorse vintage Rancilio Classe 7 machine. The grinder another classic Mazzer, and the coffee Lavazza Caffè.
