Rating: Standard, mid to lower-end Roman coffee
It was early in the morning and I was in need of a coffee. It was 10 to 8, so not that early. But either way, I took a walk after I got out of Termini to see if any cafes were open, few were. At least few that I haven’t visited before. So as I walked around, I saw some other guy was looking for a café too. Either way, we stumbled on each other again right in front of this place. By the receipt I see it’s called the Luna Bar Gastronomia but I’ll add a Caffè to make things clear. Back to the story, well, like a typical Italian, the guy I bumped into as I walked in started complaining to me. This time it was of all the foreigners in town. ‘It didn’t used to be like this back in the day, with so many immigrants here now there’s not a single café open in the morning ’… well, when I opened my mouth he fell silent. And when the barista walked into the room, an Asian guy, even more silent. Deal with it buddy, life is always changing.
This is what I got served:
Presentation: A sloppy Joe, the espresso was milked for two espressi, mine and the other guy’s so it got a bit sloppy. Whatever, we were indeed the first clients there, the machine was on for a while before though.
Temperature of Cup: Very hot, how could it have gotten so hot so early in the morn? Funny enough, the barista pulled some 2-3 shots from the machine before serving us, he threw those away. So technically he pre-flushed! Yahoo!!
Quantity: Arguably a short shot, good on this front.
Temperature: It was still very warm and I had to wait. I waited long enough for the guy to leave and well, we had a nice laugh with the barista about him.
Volume/Consistency: Thin, not very oily, and light. It was powdery in the sense that too much heat came into the shot.
Crema: It was syrupy and silky looking, but simply sloppy. Over extracted. It looked more like ice cream than anything else.
Odor: None that I could sense.
Taste: Quite bitter at first, very biting and opened to a buttery and nutty plateau, but this only after the coffee cooled for a while. Strange enough that a burnt aftertaste showed up and it wasn’t very exciting.
Overall: It was normal, I’d say a mid to lower end Roman coffee. The fact that there was an added taste to it (i.e. something not seen in worse coffee) is a plus and keeps it from being a low-end Roman coffee.
The setup: They had a nice workhorse, a cool Astoria. The grinder was the Mazzer Astoria brand, and the coffee was the Roman based Gima Caffè, and not what the cup said.
