NEW YORK 777 CAFÉ, VIA DI TOR CERVARA 283, 00155 ROMA

Rating: Poor, low quality Roman coffee

The New York 777 Café is more like a truck stop on a trafficked highway than a café. It’s got a big terrace on the outside, and when you walk up to it’s packed with construction workers who ask themselves ‘what the hell are YOU doing walking in here’. Well, that’s the feeling I got, but probably it’s because I was a new face, or one of the hundreds of new faces that pass by here, since this place is right next to the Italian immigration office, and if you have to go pick up your residence card, this will be the place to go to. Well, the coffee.. let’s star, was crap. But inside, there were all Italian baristas all having fun and laughing and making everybody there feel welcome.

This is what I got:

Presentation: Yeah, clean cup, we’re doing OK. No flush to the group head, none of that junk. This coffee’s going to rip a hole in your stomach either way, so just take it and shut up. No water was offered, it was expected, but I’m sure they would’ve obliged.

Temperature of Cup: Boiling hot.

Quantity: Short shot, yup. All in order.

Temperature: Yup, hot s hell.

Volume/Consistency: It was thin, very thin, what else am I going to get from boiling hot coffee extraction?

Crema: It was bright, uniform, and didn’t seem to overextracted, but done just right.

Odor: No odor here, normal fare.

Taste: Rancid, burnt taste… no oils, quite a flat and bitter rancid experience. I tried to take a third sip and it started to produce a bad effect on my stomach and decided not to push the issue.

Overall: On that second sip, the rancidness of the coffee really came out and that’s what made me stop. It was a good coffee and definitely not pleasant to drink. So I stopped. In this rough’n ready café, not really the place for a delicate, or refined coffee. This is a place to take your coffee ‘corretto’ and that’s it. Some liquor would’ve fixed this up quite nice.

The setup: They had an Astoria machine, perla model that is capable of doing so much more than this. The grinder was a Mazzer which is also standard excellent fare. The coffee was the Roman based Gima Caffè, which is a coffee that is specially rich and oily if done right, so I know it’s way better than this.
