MODO BAR CAFFÈ, VIA OSTIENSE 415, 00146 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-range Illy coffee

In the catch all business that cafes here in Rome are, I decided to give the Modo Caffè et alia. It’s a catch all food place, coffee in the morn and afternoon, coctails, dinner, and what not in the evening. Either way, it’s got the feel of a hipsteresque locale, lots of tubes, raw brick and the like on view. And a staff of all young guys that are the essence of Rome’s hipster scene. The barista that attended me was extra attentive and I’m not sure if it was his first day or whatever, but the service was better than normal cafes in Rome.

This is what he served:

Presentation: The cup was very fun. It was Illy, and a design I hadn’t encountered before. It was nice. This artist had an exhibition here in Rome that I missed … but nice. Water was served immediately, after he asked and got confirmation that indeed I would appreciate a cup. All was in order. The spoon very simple, and I found that interesting.

Temperature of Cup: Good temperature, not quite scalding. But warm, good, blended smoothly with the coffee itself.

Quantity: Solid espresso, no ristretto, no doppio.

Temperature: Good temperature, it was just right, and I could enjoy it without fear of being burned alive.

Volume/Consistency: Smooth, silky, sandy at a certain point. Oils weren’t over the top, but present and nice.

Crema: A bit light, and a bit of a whirlpool in there, so some overextraction. It stayed for all the drink and didn’t seem to add much to the experience.

Odor: Dark roasted coffee, very lightly, and nice.

Taste: It was smooth. There was a sharp bitter taste at first that then opened out to a smoky butterscotch. Nutty and then with a bitter aftertaste that wiped out those transient flickers of taste.

Overall: It was a decent cup. Nothing poetic, but solidly made and definitely among the mid-range Roman cafes. It was slightly above, simply because it was so silky and not pungent nor anywhere rancid.

The setup: They had the beautiful La Cimbali espresso machine that is a toy unknown to the US market. The grinders were also La Cimbali, and can be set up to create a spectacular espresso. I saw an Eureka grinder there with a Illy logo too. The coffee, yes again, Illy Caffè. The place seems worth stepping in. It’s definitely big, and a cool place to chill.
