SEVENTY BAR CAFFÈ, VIA ANTONIO ROITI 55, 00146 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-level Roman coffee

The Seventy Bar Caffè, still in the North Portuense area, is a large locale. It gives you that impression because of the very high ceilings, lots of glass and simply it’s very well lit inside. Things that normal roman bars usually don’t share. The interior has 70s theme, a light mint green color covering everything with a running ribbon on the top of the wall where the ceiling meets with a drawing of silhouettes of people dancing in a discotheque with bell bottoms and what not. I think that the younger clientele that comes here probably has no idea of what the70s are… hell, it’s 40 plus years ago! Travolta who?

This is what I got:

Presentation: Nice large cup, but what I liked about it was that it was rather thin. This is a new shape and form of cup from this brand so I was interested to know what it meant. Funny enough a few of Rome’s major coffee roasters have been rolling out new cup designs. Maybe it’s all the same coffee roaster with different trade names? Or they’re sourcing their cups from the same vendor, who’s pushing new deals. Who knows, it doesn’t make the coffee any better. No water was offered, and the two young baristas seem to have been polite enough.

Temperature of Cup: Yup, hot as hell as we expect in Rome.

Quantity: It was a short shot, although it looks more impressive than it was in the photo, it was to standard size.

Temperature: Of course after I waited long enough, things were OK, but it was still warmer than the cup.

Volume/Consistency: It was a heavy and labored consistency, powdery, and thick. It wasn’t smooth and didn’t have enough oils in the brew to convince me it was a good consistency. It was simply labored, heavyset.

Crema: It was dark, didn’t seem over extracted, and thin, and consistent and full of micro-bubbles that looked like a perfect steamed milk. It started to dissipate as I waited for the drink to cool down.

Odor: A sparkling dark charred coffee smell, I’ll take what I get and it was aromatic and powerful. Nice for a change although I would’ve liked to feel the flowers and other organic whatnot that third-wave coffee highlights.

Taste: It was very bitter, it was a heavy bitter blow to my mouth and the more I let the coffee sit on my tongue, the more rancid notes started to appear. Nothing complex, flat, one dimentional and dark-tasting. It didn’t go into rancidness, but was borderline.

Overall: It was a mid to low end Roman coffee. I’ve had this brand before and I like it. But here it wasn’t in it’s best form. Maybe it was the baristas? Maybe the setup, maybe both? Not sure, but I’d go back and try it with a different barista, I’m sure I’ll get something better.

The setup: They had a nice Astoria espresso machine with a Mazzer / Astoria grinder. The coffee was the Piramide downtown Rome-based Tintori Caffè. Again, a brand that among the dark as hell roasters of Rome, tends to be just a bit different and delivers creamy thick oozing good espresso, akin to Turkish coffee, so I like it.
