MISS COFFEE CAFFÈ, VIA SILVESTRO GHERARDI 28, 00146 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid range Roman coffee

The Bar Miss Coffee Caffè is in the very crowded café area around Via Marconi in the south of the Trastevere area, before hitting the station. It is a place densely packed with cafes, and yet all of them seem to have people in them constantly. The interesting thing about this place, was the people, most of them where immigrants from somewhere else, and all were busy on their work break. It was an interesting demonstration of how café life unifies people in Rome, without being stupidly utopian, but the visitors to this café didn’t seem to come from similar ‘coffee cultures’, and yet the only between this bar and other bars was that everybody had an accent. Besides that, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from any other bar jam packed with local ‘Roman’ residents (whatever that means, yes?).

The barista was super nice and kept in conversation with everybody, and maybe this is the glue that held everybody together. Either way, I went in for the usual.

This is what I got:

Presentation: A nice large, round, bowl-like cup of Joe. Given my preference, it seemed like I could have soup in it, but in reality it’s quite small, a lot smaller than your average café latte cup in the US. Clea, crisp, and no markings on it. All in order. Water was very kindly given after I asked for it. He also gave the other guys a full bottle of sparkling water to serve themselves at will with water. Not seen that before.

Temperature of Cup: Cup was extremely hot, really darn hot. And it continued to be hot for quite some time, I had to start reading the sports newspaper at the bar to wait for it to cool down.

Quantity: Solid espresso, wasn’t too long, was just right.

Temperature: After I waited for a good 3 minutes or so, the cup was good and so was the espresso itself. All in order after this.

Volume/Consistency: It was thin, not very oily, and light. In this context it wasn’t rich nor as oily as it needed to be to hold it quite up right. But it wasn’t watery nor runny, just a bit on the skimpy side.

Crema: A bit two-tone, dark and lighter brown, a bit over-extracted. It had a good texture, not too cakey nor fluffy. It was a bit persistent well over half of the drink, and then gave way towards the rim of the cup.

Odor: Dark charred coffee smell. Typical of Danesi roast.

Taste: It was a mild bitterness defined by sharp, astringent notes, and a tendency towards rancidness. But it didn’t arrive there and kept itself a bay from being a awful coffee. With sugar it would have surely opened up to be a nice buoyant coffee. This should be taken into consideration.

Overall: It was a decent mid-range roman coffee. If there had been a bit more coffee in the porta filter then it would have been quite good.

The setup: The machine and coffee being served were both Danesi Caffè, a Roman based roaster that’s operating out of the southern-most part of the Portuense area. The grinder was a large Mazzer.
