FROG BAR CAFFÈ, PIAZZALE LUIGI STURZO 6-8, 00144 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid to upper range Illy Coffee

The EUR are is jam packed with cafes. The Frog Bar Caffè is one of Rome’s typical establishments that is a bit of a nightclub, night lounge, lunch and light dinner place, and of course first and foremost a café. So I thought, why not? The place was packed with business folk and lots of fancy dressed tens, a dangerous mix … but it’s the norm here. I decided to go inside to get the café at the bar. The interior is bathed in gold and mirrors and the like and its quite an interesting décor, a bit heavy, but not uncool.

This is what I got served:

Presentation: A nice, clean, and rather large cup of coffee. No water was served, but I could have gotten one, I saw other people asking for it and being given at no charge. The spoon was OK, and everything gave the impression of cleanliness.

Temperature of Cup: It was warm, and borderline too hot. But after a half a minute it was good and could hold on to it without a problem.

Quantity: It was a solid espresso, not very long. Probably a hair short of f an ounce.

Temperature: It was good, not very hot and didn’t reflect the cup temperature, fortunately. And I think this was crucial in the espresso itself. Read on…

Volume/Consistency: It was very creamy, silky, and buttery. It had a thickish, but not heavy consistency that made it a delight to drink.

Crema: It was uniform, no real signs of over extraction and a nice micro porous texture. It added to the drinking experience.

Odor: There was a dark roasted coffee smell that is typical of Illy. Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s an added on Folgers type of smell…

Taste: It was good. It wasn’t extremely bitter. It was mild, nutty and buttery at the same time, smooth and coated the mouth in a very pleasant way.

Overall: I was very happy and impressed with it. I wasn’t expecting much from an establishment like this.Usually it’s the coctails that are the forte in these places, the coffee tends to be an afterthought to the ‘show’. So very happy.

The setup: They had the traditional duo that comes with Illy Caffè, that is a La Cimbali espresso machine and grinder. Good and would be better if places really took time to fine tune their setup to their beans/grind thickness. Here it was rather good, but I’m sure it could be better with this machine.
