MORGANTI CAFÉ, PIAZZA DEL VIMINALE 10-13, 00184 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-range Roman Coffee

The Morganti Caffè is just a few storefronts away from the Caffetteria Mori, which was absolutely perfect. So I was eager to see what this flagship store was like. Morganti Caffè is a local and historic Roman roaster. The interior was big, to large locales. On the right you had seating and eating area, and on the left you had the bar. When I walked in, at mid morning, there was literally not a soul in the place either. So I had the baristas full attention on my espresso.

This is what was placed in front of me:

Presentation: Yeah, a short, fluted cup that I like. It’s just like the Marziali caffe cup. The politically incorrect caricature of an native of some sort (not sure south America, or Africa, or what have you!) is there on the logo, and is a throwback to the 1920s era styling. The spoon was clean, and it looked like it wouldn’t quite reach into the bottom of the tiny cup.

Temperature of Cup: It was warm, borderline way too hot.

Quantity: Very short shot, no qualms here.

Temperature: Funny, the coffee itself was quite cold, almost lukewarm, so it was an odd combination to have the drink coldish, and the cup almost boiling.

Volume/Consistency: It was powdery in consistency, a bit chalky, and not very oily. It had a lot of grinds in the water, but not bad.

Crema: Was light, persistent, and not thick, but very fine bubbles and not over-extracted.

Odor: Dark char roasted coffee. But yes, fragrant indeed.

Taste: It was bitter up front, flat taste, no flavor profile, no type of distinction to make in the coffee taste wheel. However the finish and lingering aftertaste was indeed towards the nutty side of things.

Overall: It was a normal coffee. Nothing about it made me think that this was ‘the’ place to drink Morganti coffee. It was, however, better than I’ve had it at other places, where usually it is a dark petroleum like brew that turns into tar in your mouth. Not here. It was enjoyable, and solid mid-range.

The setup: Wow, did they have the setup figured out. They had two espresso machines and only one at the time turned on. The one I got the espresso from was a Wega Vela:

 the other one, see here;

Was also a Wega Vela, but a lever as you can see. I wonder how the same espresso on the E61 and the Lever would have compared! The grinders were Astorias (some Mazzer and other more vintage pieces). The coffee, was of course Morganti Caffe.
