ANTICA CAFFETTERIA LIBRIZZI DA GIÒ, VIALE AVENTINO 101-103, 00153 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid to low level Roman Coffee

The Antica Caffetteria Librizzi da Giò dal 1945 is a place that is literally right next to the Casa Manfredi Caffè, which has excellent third-wave like Lavazza coffee (one of the best in Rome, actually!) so it’s got really a stiff competition. But whatever, there are so many places here in Rome where you have two to three bars literally right next to each other, and they’re all usually quite busy. This was the case here. The bar has a few tables outside and they were all full, and inside, I found about 8 people hugged at the small tables and bar. The barista took my order, but seemed disinterested in the coffee, more about the gossip going on outside with one of the patrons…

This is what I got:

Presentation: I liked it. It was different, not a brand on it, but I liked the saucer. Cool. No water offered. The spoon was small and to size. And both spoon and cup were crisp, clean, professional.

Temperature of Cup: Not scalding- good start. Warm. Even better.

Quantity: Solid one ounce espresso. On the mark. Good. Getting better.

Temperature: Warm, not scalding, not cold, not boiling. Much better.

Volume/Consistency: It was not heavy, actually creamy, powdery, but not chalky. It was quite light. As if it was linseed oil instead of olive oil.

Crema: Thin, it started to die off quickly and dissipated in the center after my first sip. Showed signs of being overextracted.

Odor: Nope. Anything new in Rome?

Taste: It was smooth, not very bitter, mild in taste and quite flat and stale in complexity of flavor. This it was bitter as expected, dark roasted flavor, and no real finish other than that of a dark roast. Not very flavorful nor colorful.

Overall: It was a solid light, and non-descript coffee here in Rome. Nothing differentiating it from other places. Let’s say it was designed to not raise any eyebrows…

The setup: Very indeed. They had a Royal Espresso Monza model espresso machine, with a massive Anfim grinder. I love these grinders! The coffee, is Circi Caffè. This is a roman-based roaster that has very tangy, punchy coffee. I used to not like it, but now I’ve had it brewed by some very good bars and it’s a decent Roman styled coffee, if pulled off correctly.
