Rating: Standard, mid to low level Illy Coffee
The EUR area is a playground for large corporate buildings, and the nightlife of chilling at cocktail bars- dancing, that’s another story that’s quite missing from Roman nightlife… but that’s another story. Either way, you have a café that is a cocktail bar. In the evening the Tiki Bar Caffè lights up with flashy blue lights to give a sleek ambience, in the morning, it’s got a relaxed atmosphere where you have a coffee and pastry. As you walk into the place, and pass by the enclosed curbside patio, you walk straight onto the bar with the espresso machine directly behind the counter.
This is what I got:
Presentation: Yup, another cup of Illy coffee. It was rather large, and the saucer was to measure, the spoon sat on it upside down, and no water was offered.
Temperature of Cup: Good temperature, I’m on a roll… espresso have been toned down lately, this is good!
Quantity: This a solid espresso, it looks short, but the cup was rather large. We’re good so far.
Temperature: It was very warm, warmer than the cup itself, and it gave me a jolt. I didn’t get burnt, but it was brewed quite warm.
Volume/Consistency: It was thin, wispy, watery, not oily. Neither was it chalky.
Crema: It was thin, not persistent, and didn’t seem to add to texture of the espresso.
Odor: Faint smell of coffee, not really fragrant.
Taste: It was punchy, strong and bitter up front. It had a tart taste that was accentuated by the high temperature. It was monochromatic and didn’t have much depth at all.
Overall: It was decent, nothing spectacular, and run of the mill.
The setup: They had the expected La Cimbali espresso machine and grinder duo that is always, always there when Illy coffee is served.
