PUCCIAMI CAFFÈ, VIA CAVOUR 327, 00184 ROMA

Rating: Standard, upper to mid-range Roman coffee

The Pucciami Caffè is frequented, in large part, by tourists. I guess there was a restaurant chain of this (I found this out afterwards looking online) but this is just a cafe with nothing else. I guess there was/is a restaurant, but this wasn't it. I walked in and immediately was greeted in English, without ever having said anything. The place is clean, very polite (wow, how rare is that in Rome!) and it’s got a very relaxed atmosphere, where you’re not pushed out of the bar, nor the table. So it’s quite nice for tourists, and in my opinion, for those that enjoy chilling at a café. I didn’t think of checking to see if they had free Wi-Fi, but they might not, as they’re in a very touristy street and probably don’t want that many people eating up their table time with only once café. The locale is small inside, probably no more than 4 tables, and it has outside seating that was full. Hey, it was a nice morning, who can you blame?

This is what I got:

Presentation: The saucer felt like a plate. It was clearly from a larger cup, a caffe latte cup. Whatever, The spoon was good, and the espresso cup itself was neat and clean. No water was offered, and I won’t venture to say if it would have been given free or not at the bar itself.

Temperature of Cup: It was warm, not hot, nor cold. It was great.

Quantity: It was a really short shot. Maybe it was the fact that after I greeted the guy in Italian, he might have thought I was, but the espresso was really, quite a ristretto. The shortest ‘espresso’ I’ve had in a long time. Great!

Temperature: It was at a good temperature. Could really taste the coffee itself, and not just boiling liquid.

Volume/Consistency: It was syrupy, a bit chalky, very oily, and while not thick or heavy, it had a creamy consistency that was great!

Crema: It was robust, thick, persistent, added significantly to the drinking experience, and not cakey, nor fake old whipped cream looking. It was infused with a lot of oil.

Odor: There was a fragrant dark-roasted coffee smell. Bravo!

Taste: It was very tangy, silky, and had a sizzly type of taste. It had a finish that left my numb a bit numb. The taste was not bitter at all, but soft, and had a light flavor of dark-roasted coffee. The oiliness of the coffee really coated my mouth entirely and left me savoring a really good espresso.

Overall: This is a very good, and had it had more flavor, it would have been an excellent espresso. This is quite a lot to say about a place that caters almost 100% to tourists. Nearly all places I have frequented that are tourist centered are serving junk in their cups. This instead, was really great!

The setup: They had a good setup to make excellent coffee. They had a Royal Espresso machine that squirts out great creamy drinks, and the grinder was a Fiorenzato F6 model. All solid. The coffee was the Roman-based Caffè Fantini, which is typically a very bitter and punchy coffee flavor roaster. It was nicely brewed in this locale, thoughtful at least!
