Rating: Standard, solid mid-range Roman coffee
The Green Bar Caffè is a thin mono-locale that has a very roomy interior. It’s got a bigger space towards end, and its interior is a mix of low-key proper attire, and more refined ‘wood paneling’ type of place. It works, and it’s not pretentious. When I walked in the barista, a woman in her late 40s was in full roar with two guys. They were regulars and were laughing hysterically. It was great. As I went to the bar, they all greeted me with a laugh and brought me into their merry mood. It was simply very pleasing, and speaks volumes of the type of place this is. A nice touch was the beautiful gleaming cup of ‘crema di caffè’ that was made available on the counter. There’s few places in Rome that still serve this up, and this is a very nice bonus!
The coffee I got served was the following:
Presentation: Interesting cup. It’s got a fun pointed handle that’s very Jetson’s like with a straight fluted design. The spoon was boxy, and yet fit well to the design of the cup and saucer. No water offered, but the would have given it to me if I had asked.
Temperature of Cup: The cup was in good warm temperature, not scalding. Nor cold and wet.
Quantity: It was a short, concise cup. Well under the 30ml / 1 oz of a regular espresso, but not half either.
Temperature: It was also very good, not boiling hot, but brewed in the lower end of the 90s C spectrum.
Volume/Consistency: It was very silky, thickish and had a powdery volume to it. It wasn’t off putting, but it wasn’t chalky either.
Crema: It was persistent, cakey and quite light, and a bit over-extracted. It added to the drinking experience quite a lot.
Odor: Dark dark dark smell of dark roasted coffee, but this wasn’t very strong and I really had to inhale deeply to get at the smell.
Taste: It was very bitter up front, very bitter in the middle, and finished off flat and without any notes of other fruits, tastes, etc. It was stout because of the consisencey of the coffee, and wasn’t offensive.
Overall: This was a mid-range solid Roman espresso that it’s lack of rancidness and flat- monotone taste is in line with what Romans like. It’s a place that if’d add the crema di caffè to the coffee, you’ll have a spectacular brew right there in your hands. The barista and the locale is nice and well.. a nice change from the sex shop that sits right next to it.
The setup: They had a beautiful Royal Espresso machine and Fiorenzato grinder duo. Definitely to put some creamy coffee on the counter. The coffee itself I wasn’t able to get much info on, it was Thomas Caffè, which the barista wasn’t able to tell me where they’re from and I haven’t been able to find much web presence… so an incognito. But a decent incognito at it.
