CASADEI ANGELO BAR CAFFÈ, LUNGOTEVERE DEGLI INVENTORI 116 A-D, 00146 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-range Roman coffe

The Casadei Angelo Bar Caffè gave me a sensation of a place that was about to shut down, of decadence, melancholy. Maybe I caught it at the wrong time of the day, I don’t know. But all it’s windows were barred up (it faces a bend of the Tevere river with not much foot traffic except for an avenue), there was no ‘name’ logo (and I know that here in Italy you have to pay annual taxes on the ‘size’ of your logo!), and when I walked in, it was quiet, lonely, and I was the only soul there. The barista and the cashier, seemed like an couple in their late forties, early fifties, were discussing when they had to pay some kind of bill.

This is what I got:

Presentation: Yeah, nice cup,

but look at the spoon. Definitely the most fun I’ve seen here in Rome so far. Just a novelty, but fun! No water was offered, and the cup was clean.

Temperature of Cup: It was at a very good temperature.

Quantity: When I glanced at it, it was a short shot, but as I drank it, the shot was a bit longer – maybe it was a solid 1 ounce (ca. 30ml) but it felt long.

Temperature: The espresso was great, not terribly hot, nor cold.

Volume/Consistency: It was thin. Slightly silky, as if it had a decent TDS (total dissolved solids) ratio happening,

Crema: It was light, uniform, and not over-extracted, but reflecting the coffee mix, and started to fade away mid way into my drink. I didn’t feel it added significantly to my drinking experience.

Odor: Nope, I couldn’t really make it out.

Taste: It was bitter up front, no extremely strong, and no rancidness. It was very flat, and mono-chromatic, no real brilliance and didn’t speak of freshness.

Overall: It was a coffee that was indistinguishable from many I had. Here you’re getting mid-range, indistinct, but solidly robust Roman coffee. Not bad, but right around the corner you have the Picasso Bistrot Caffè with a much brighter, more complex coffee. You decide.

The setup: It was professional. They had a San Remo espresso machine, and with a grinder that I couldn’t make out, but probably a vintage San Remo, not sure. The coffee being brewed was Miami Caffè. I believe this is a Roman roaster, but I have not been able to identify their website or any info. People I’ve asked before have confirmed that this is indeed a Roman roaster, so….
