Rating: Standard, Low-end something was off coffee
The Caffetteria Jolie a very cute place. It’s logo is sharp, clean, and modern, and its interior is white, clean, sharp and modern. It’s got some nice plants, not too many, and then as I walked in, the owner was sitting behind the counter finishing tramezzini. It is very small, one monolocale, and long and deep as so many places are here. But I liked this and I liked the fact that, again, it looked manicured and clean and nice. That was the impression I got of this place. We’re still near the Viale Marconi which is clogged – ultra clogged with cafes. If I have an opportunity I want to give this place a second chance… it was just so charming! Its in a very dead through street and doesn’t seem to receive a lot of occasional traffic, but rather those locals that live or work there. As I waited for the barista/owner to finish her sandwiches and make my coffee, like five guys, who apparently worked nearby walked in and- had coffee- and ran out, all joking and jesting with the barista/owner. It was very nice.
Asking for a cup got me this:
Presentation: Well, first before I got this nice thing I had to wait quite a bit, the owner was right in the middle of putting the finishing touches on the sandwhiches, then she proceeded to clean the portafilter, grind some coffee, wait for the automatic grinder to come to rest, and then pour me an espresso. Look at the cup – it’s fun! It’s got a target and the name ‘Guglielmo’ or (William in English) right on the logo. Cool I thought. The spoon was to measure, and a cup of water came happily along with the coffee.
Temperature of Cup: Uff, the cup was boiling white hot. I had to wait quite a lot to drink this, literally. I grabbed and quickly let go of it, boy was it scalding hot.
Quantity: This was short, concise, not outside of the bounds of reason for a small espresso in Rome.
Temperature: Hmmm… again, quite disturbingly hot. I waited a good four to 5 minutes, I know this is exaggerated, and the owner/barista looked at my cup like 10 times to see if I’d drank it, but it was literally still boiling when I got it.
Volume/Consistency: It was thick, oily, and damn heavy, petrol-sludge like exxon valdez type of sludge thick.
Crema: It was crunchy, oily, bubbly and somehow off… it looked sticky and yet cakey.
As you can see below, it dissipated very quickly
Odor: Yes, there was a deep dark-charr roasted coffee smell, Either way, the coffee was freshly ground as I saw it there. How fresh the beans in the hopper were, at max from the day before.
Taste: Well, it wasn’t straight out horrible or undrinkable, although… I didn’t finish it. It was simply very very bitter, very very flat in taste and it didn’t get to rancid, it was indeed simply off.
Overall: I haven’t pulled a shot this bad myself in a long time so I can’t recall what it is, but my guess its that there was a bit too much coffee in the porta filter, the shot was too long, and the temperature sky high. Simple as there. The place is so endearing that I want to give it another try when I pass by here.
The setup: And the thing is that this is a great setup they had. A nice straight forward E61 based Wega espresso machine, a cool Fiorenzato, and a south-Italian (on the boot! Near Catanazaro) based Guglielmo Caffè, apparently a quite successful roaster from the mid fifties or something of the sort.
