Rating: Standard, mid- to low-end Roman Coffee
In the heart of Rome’s old Jewish quarter you find the Kosher Bistrot Caffè. Its got lots of tables on the outside, usually packed with people and has a modern, light décor to it that is very pleasant. When I walked in it was evening and it was the first time I’ve seen this place without tons of people on its tables. The quiet atmosphere gave me the opportunity to see how this coffee was put together.

Asking for an espresso got the barista in action and she gave me this:

Presentation: A nice round, playful cup. A few weeks ago I had seen this cup and I had really liked the saucer, which is oval. The cup design for Danesi caffè has been around for a while, but the saucer no. It’s fun, and it goes with the décor of the place. No water offered,
Temperature of Cup: The cup was at a good temperature, it was a surprise as I usually get scalding cups from Danesi brewers. We’re off to a good start.
Quantity: It was an almost full espresso, slightly shy. This is good. That cup feels like I’m drinking espresso from a cereal bowl, so I appreciated it.
Temperature: Nice! Also good temperature espresso. Definitely off to a good start.
Volume/Consistency: It was silky, oily and thickish. All really terrific aspects.
Crema: The crema was not persistent, didn’t stay with the drink. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it didn’t add to the coffee.

Odor: No real odor, no surprise here. Typical side-effect of being a Roman coffee.
Taste: The espresso had great aspects so far, until I tasted it. It was very bitter and simply so powerful that I couldn’t taste any subtleties to it. It was not rancid in any way, but it was bitter as heck.

Overall: Everything was controlled and set up for a really great espresso, but the pungentness of it, really put me off. However, for a regular Roman drinker, this would surely be a positive thing. For me, it was a mid to low-end Roman coffee. It was so bitter that it wasn’t pleasant. Maybe had I tried it at 7 am before going to work, I would have had a different opinion?
The setup: The setup was the traditional one on a Danesi Caffè ‘plan’. They use a Danesi proprietary espresso machine and a Mazzer grinder. All a great combo for good coffee. The coffee brand is a Roman-based roaster. This was decent in comparison to other places. Their coffee usually tastes like it’s char-roasted and usually rancid… but here it was well within good boundaries and yet still super bitter.
