Rating: Standard, solid mid to upper-range Roman coffee
On the winding streets east of the EUR park complex is the EM. GI. Snack Bar Caffè. It is within minutes distance to a whole other set of really good cafes, so it’s got tough competition, at least in my opinion. When I came upon this, I liked the fact that the coffee brand they were brewing was prominently displayed. They also had a sign inviting their customers to try their coffee without milk or sugar (see below), this I especially liked. It was branding merchandise from Mondi Caffè, the brand of coffee they were serving, but hey, I liked it anyway. The interior has a long bar on the right hand side and then on the left a narrow passage with some tables. It’s got a homey feeling to the interior with plaid tablecloths and the like. It was really chill, and the only thing out of place, again in my opinion, was a TV set dominating the area hung above towards the ceiling in the middle of the bar area, however its sound was turned off and I really appreciated it. Although there were about 6 to 7 people in the café when I walked in, it was really quiet. Not bad.
Asking for a coffee got me this:
Presentation: Nice cup, a bit large, heavily bowled, and yet delicate. Its spoon seemed a bit small in comparison, but it secured its ability to stir at the bottom. No water was offered, but the guy seemed very courteous and I feel here you’d get a cup of free water without a prob.
Temperature of Cup: The cup was hot, yup, this is traditional Roman styled coffee. This is how it always begins I thought.
Quantity: It was not a bad quantity. It was solid one ounce (30 ml).
Temperature: Once I waited a few minutes it cooled and it was fine.
Volume/Consistency: It was oily, very. And it was silky, very. It had a thick consistency and I was very glad.
Crema: It was dark, had a leopard-like print to it. Very nice. It wasn’t too persistent, not bad either. It definitely helped out the consistency of the espresso as I drank it.
Odor: Yahoo! Dark roasted coffee smell. I was glad for the smell, that it was coffee, but the dark roast was a bit stronger than I would have liked. Still, very positive.
Taste: Here I was expecting something more complex. It was very strongly bitter. Awfully bitter in my opinion. There was no room for any different taste complexities and it was rather flat. But not bad.
Overall: had this bee a bit more complex in coffee taste, it would have been a stellar espresso. Maybe with a half-spoon of sugar this would have come out in the coffee. But as it was it was a very good coffee that doesn’t disappoint. I would definitely come back to it.
The setup: They were creating this coffee on a La Cimbali espresso machine, and I couldn’t see the grinder but it was also probably a la Cimbali. Of course they were brewing Mondi Caffè, a brand that I do like.
