Rating: Poor, undrinkable Roman coffee
The Antico Caffè Bar in Trastevere has been under a scaffolding for about a year and a half, and that’s kept me from going in sooner. And well, when the scaffolding was taken down a few weeks ago, the café didn’t end up impressing. Not sure if it’s been in the dark too long, or if the dampness of no direct sunlight did something to the coffee, but something was definitely off when I tried it. Let’s see why.
Asking for coffee got me the following very politely placed on the bar:
Presentation: Yes, the micro-shot of water. The cup was rather boxy and large, not y favorite shape, but not a complaint. The spoon was placed as you see, ready to be picked up for use. The espresso was not split for two coffees, so I had a nice full shot all to myself.
Temperature of Cup: The cup was hot, very hot. Hotter than I imagined it’d be. I fortunately touched it with the side of my inner wrist before I had it. Saved myself some pain.
Quantity: It was on the mark, not too long at all. Rather short and concise.
Temperature: The espresso was still very hot when I tried it. However it wasn’t scalding anymore.
Volume/Consistency: It was raspy, sandy, almost crunchy in volume, but liquidy- almost as if was drinking a drip coffee that had a broken paper filter.
Crema: The crema was thin, not lasting, and as you can see from the bubbly expression it wears – overextracted.
Odor: This was a dead giveaway even before I started to taste the espresso. It smelled like charred coal. The stuff that the Epiphany witch in Rome brings to kids who don’t behave… yes, coal instead of candy.
Taste: Well it was like drinking coal water. Really bad water. Something must have been up with the water tank in the espresso machine as it had a really strong metallic taste. So much so that I couldn’t finish the drink, as you can see, I did tri, but it was extremely rancid and simply poor.
Overall: What else to add. It had good elements, but the most important, how those come together and create a flavor- it was not there. The rancidness and the ‘dirty water’ impression just wouldn’t let me finish the coffee… A pity I waited so long to try this place, I should have waited longer until they serviced their machine.
The setup: Here’s an interesting machine that I don’t see every day- it was a VBM - Vibiemme espresso machine. The grinder was a Casadio, and the coffee being brewed was Miami Caffè, a roaster that I believe is locally produced, althought I have not been able to get confirmation either through people serving it or info on the web...
