CAFÉ ART CAFFETTERIA, VIA CATANZARO 40-42, 00161 ROMA

Rating: Standard, low-end Roman coffee

The Café Art Caffetteria sits on an inviting corner (near Piazza Bologna) that leads you to want to walk in. Its interior is a bit odd because you encounter a bar with food right when you walk in, and then you have to move to your left, pass by the cashier, and then finally reach the ‘bar’ where the coffee machine is at the end. The whole ensemble is very brightly lit, clean, and the décor is a straightforward, not shabby and clean. There were a couple of guys sittin there chilling on the bar against the window, so it’s definitely a place you can go and spend some time inside without getting the feeling that you’re not welcomed.

Asking for a coffee got me this:

Presentation: The barista was very courteous and yet no water was offered. I’m sure she would have obliged. The cup was of a shape that I like, fluted and small. IT was clean. But the saucer looked a bit beat up. It looks dirty, but those two lines are actually fissures on the ceramic saucer that are dirty, and almost impossible to clean. The spoon was small enough to stir the sugar at the bottom if I had added it.

Temperature of Cup: It was at a good temperature, perfect for drinking.

Quantity: You have a look, it was probably a third of an ounce (like 20 ml). It was a fun short shot! I was glad.

Temperature: The espresso itself was very good and just the right temperature.

Volume/Consistency: Thin, super. It was watery and not oily. I was disappointed because I thought it’d be a lot heavier, more substantial. It wasn’t- I could have had 10 of these I felt.

Crema: It was bright, almost illuminated the cup itself. It was light brown, almost orange, and thin, persistent on the sides. It really didn’t add anything to the coffee I drank…

Odor: Nope, none here.

Taste: Boy, it was like taking in a razor blade in your mouth. It was extremely bitter, and boy did it leave a bad aftertaste in my mouth. It was bordering on the rancid, and while it wasn’t there, if this is your first espresso here in Rome you’d really think it was!

Overall: This coffee had everything for it, it was an espresso that had good temperature control, good size, and yet fell short. I think that a bit more fine tuning of the temperature and fineness of the grounds would totally change this coffee.

The setup: It was beautiful- an Astoria machine and two grinders (love the decaf grinder!) what else do you need to kick ass? Not much, just a bit of TLC! The coffee being brewed was PeriCaff caffè. A local Roman roaster that does very sharp- bitter coffee. I’ve had better before so yes. Maybe the coffee was a bit like this because I had the coffee later in the afternoon, and the machine was overheating? Hmm…
