OASI BAR CAFFÈ, VIA PADOVA 73, 00161 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid level Roman coffee

The Oasi Bar Caffè is in the area between the Piazzale delle Province and the Piazza Bologna. It sits nonchalant without much ado and seems pretty sober. In the interior of this monolocale you have a lively family running the café. The guests seem feisty and the main owner seems to have a liking for friendly bickering, so typical here of Rome. The 20 something son is the barista and his hip demeanor shows he liked what he was doing, he kept his cool at the machine the whole time.

Asking for a coffee got me this:

Presentation: Yup, a cup like, and a brand that delivers decent coffee. The cup was clean, spoon was crisp, and a nice glass of water was given to me after I asked for it.

Temperature of Cup: Very good temperature. Outside it was very cold, and my hands were freezing, so the cup seemed a bit tepid, but with my lips I could tell it was warm and not scalding nor cold.

Quantity: It was a very good short shot.

Temperature: The espresso was also very good temperature. Not boiling, solidly good.

Volume/Consistency: It was thinner than I expected. I was thinking I’d get a syrupy drink, but it was light, airy, a type of espresso that I could have 2 or 3 of at one sitting.

Crema: The crema looked nice and lush. It had some different areas of color and showed signs of oiliness. But it wasn’t as thick, again, as it looked. It was persistent and consistently accompanied the drink but it was thin.

Odor: No odor of coffee, this is common place here in Rome.

Taste: The taste was complex in the sense that it was very bitter, extremely bitter and felt at times a bit metallic to acidic- and it didn’t dip into the rancid side of things. But the combination I was tasting gave me the impression it was down there.

Overall: Overall, it was a mid to low level espresso because the taste spectrum was so reduced and the acidity of it somehow gave me the impression of a rancid drink, but again, I can tell these a mile away and this wasn’t rancid.

The setup: I wasn’t able to get a photo of the espresso machine because the owner was chatting with me and a customer right next to me, and they were already suspicious of my photo taking. But what impeded the photo more was that the machine was buried behind the counter and behind a wall of candy bars, etc that they were selling. Through a mirror on the back wall I could see it was an Astoria machine, but not sure what grinder. Probably an Astoria too. The coffee was indeed Gima Caffè.
