Rating: Standard, normal Roman Coffee
Next to the Termini station on the Via Marsala you have the Binario Zero Caffè (a name akin to ‘Platform Zero’ or the like). Its touching the Trombetta Caffè locale, so either there’s enough customers or its poor business sense. It looks like the former as the place was packed with people. The interior of this monolocale is very long and is rather modern in décor, and somehow reminded me a of a dentist’s office: Clean proper, a bit overstuffed with décor, but somehow grown-up and not necessarily fun. Whatever, it was decent and being next to Termini that speaks volumes already.
Asking for a coffee at the bar which is nestled deep at the end of the locale go me this:
Presentation: Nice clean cup. Looked crisp, and played off very nicely on the night sky blue counter top. Its spoon was long, narrow and the end just right for this cup. No water was offered. No label on the cup and that made me happy.
Temperature of Cup: The temperature was good. We’re off to a good start!
Quantity: As you can see it seemed just right. It was a full one ounce drink.
Temperature: The espresso itself was a bit warmer than I expected from the temperature of the cup. Maybe it was because it was so cold outside, and I was still a bit freezing, but I was surprised by the contrast.
Volume/Consistency: Very smooth. Not runny, nor necessarily thin, it was subtle and gentle. Not silky, but not crunchy.
Crema: And I wouldn’t guess at this from the crema alone. Since it was rather uniform, light brown and a bit over-extracted (look at the bubble iceberg at the top). But instead the crema was persistent, tended to thin out and added considerably to the drink. It had a chunky like consistency.
Odor: A very deeply charred coffee smell.
Taste: Very bitter, deeply bitter. I was wondering what coffee it was…. It didn’t leave room for exploring the coffee itself as it was pungent, but not rancid. No hidden flavors.
Overall: This was a decent mid-grade espresso. It was controlled, and didn’t rip my stomach in half. Had it been a bit oilier, and a bit less pungent it would have been extraordinary. But as such, it was decent. Better than the coffee right next to them…
The setup: They had a nice Royal Espresso machine that looked very nice and like it could do some real damage when honed in properly. The Grinder was a brand that I’m coming to like more and more, an Anfim. And the coffee, well it was Classico Caffè Circi. This is the roman-based roaster that usually is super deeply bitter near rancid, but here was decidedly better than other places. I’d say next to the Constatino Caffè, this was the next best place where to try it!
