CAFFETTERIA DELL'OROLOGIO, VIA CAVOUR 77-79, 00184 ROMA

Rating: Standard, solidly mid-range Roman coffee

When you exit Termini and head towards the Monti neighborhood down via Cavour you pass by the Caffetteria dell’Orologio. It’s a rather large locale, and has the normal mix of looking ‘traditional’ with wooden bar and odd paneling here and there combined with smirrors, etc. Yet the tables and other odd furniture made of tube steel, etc didn’t quite finish the effect but added something careless to the place. The barista was in a good mood and the place was filled with various tourists sitting and enjoying their cup. The place has a larger space towards the back that appears to be able to accommodate lots of folk.

Asking for a coffee got this:

Presentation: No water given, but I didn’t ask either. A guy next to me asked for a ‘caffe ristrettissimo’ along with a cup of water and it was given to him with out a flinch. The funny thing was that I peered into his ‘ristrettissimo’ coffee, and the barista gave him the darned same shot as he gave me. …. The cup was clean not beat up, and the spoon to size.

Temperature of Cup: It was good, not scalding.

Quantity: It was a good short shot, it was probably just about three-quarters of an ounce.

Temperature: Very good temperature, it was quite hot, but not scalding. I admit that I let this one sit for about a minute before drinking it.

Volume/Consistency: This was a nice surprise. It was very silky and smooth. It wasn’t sharp, nor whispy.

Crema: The crema left something to be desired. It was flat, uniform, light and not oily. It was convinced the coffee was going to runny and thin looking at this, but it turned out better than I hoped.

Odor: Wow there was a good smell of dark roasted coffee coming from the cup! Not such a common occurrence here in Rome.

Taste: It was a dark, bitter espresso, no flavor hints, except an odd sweet aftertaste. Yet, no different types of nuances anywhere. Solid straight dark-roasted coffee.

Overall: Overall, it was a shot that looked meek and brewed at a high temperature, that ended up being ok and solidly holding its own. Not bad.

The setup: The espresso machine was an Astoria and the coffee was the roman based Gima Caffè. They’re quite around and usually deliver up a very rich silky espresso that doesn’t really ever get into the rancid range. Limited palate, but strong and consistent.
