MONTI BAR CAFFÈ, VIA URBANA 93, 00184 ROMA

Rating: Standard, normal Illy Coffee

Here’s a nice locale to know about. The Monti Bar Caffè sits in the heart of Monti and its got a bit of everything. It’s got a large outside seating area that’s covered by a canopy, so rain or shine you’re there able to smoke or chill. It’s got a normal roman ‘bar’ area with the bar and some high stools against the window, and then a really fancy area where you can sit with your computer and work and chat with folks. The baristas seem to be friendly and overall it’s got a very polished look to it. This is a place you can have a business meeting in and not feel you’re meeting in a dumpy back street joint- it’s got a ‘hotel lounge’ feel to it actually.

Asking for a coffee got me this:

Presentation: Water was served immediately in a nice short glass. It was nice, faceted, looked like your grandma’s cup, but here it somehow fit. The spoon was this typical Illy flat fun spoon. All ok, the cup design I’ve seen a million times so not so interesting anymore, but yes.

Temperature of Cup: Was good, normal, controlled.

Quantity: It was a rather longish espresso in this very large bowl shaped cup. I would say an ounce and a half.

Temperature: The coffee itself was at a good temperature, no complaints.

Volume/Consistency: It was a thin coffee. This length naturally lends itself to that. And it didn’t occupy much space in my mouth. It wasn’t cutting, but just very lightly textured- not oily or thick. Some people like this, so, nothing more to add.

Crema: It was uniform, runny, soupy, like your grandma’s 2 week old chicken broth. It was not persistent either. It was according to corporate headquarters of Illy a ‘picture perfect’ crema. Get the idea?

Odor: No real coffee odors, nothing to enhance my drinking experience here. C’est la vie as they say. Nothing out of the norm for Rome.

Taste: lt was standard Illy. Not rancid, not complex, not fruity, but dark roasted and very much controlled high-temperature roasted commercial coffee. It was not overly bitter and nor overly acidic.

Overall: It was a light affair, which gave you the possibility of having a few espressos in a row and not get a headache or a stomach ache. Not bad. Standard.

The setup: Well they had the standard package- a La Cimbali XP-1 machine with grinder and were serving Illy Coffee. I have nothing against this, only that it’s like serving starbucks at your hip café. Nothing wrong, only just mainstream.
