DANY’S BAR CAFFÈ, VIALE EUROPA 123-125, 00144 ROMA

Rating: Standard, very good Roman Coffee

The Café Dany’s Bar is in the EUR area, which is full of pungently bitter coffee. There’s a great coffee shop that I’ll review shortly, but in the meantime, this place takes the prize for good coffee. The place is the typical Roman coffee cum everything. It has a bit of a 7-Eleven feel, a bit of a tobacco shop, a bit of a restaurant, etc. They’re simply looking to maximize your spending there, without actually being like a starbucks where you can lounge about for 6 hours on one single coffee. Either way, I was positively surprised by this place.

Walking towards the back of the locale I asked for a coffee and got this:

Presentation: Not impressive, by all means. The cup was large, almost a tea cup, no water was offered and there was no logo, no branding, nothing. Just straight-up simplicity, old school ‘who gives a crap’ about ‘visuals’ and not much more.

Temperature of Cup: It was perfect. It was a large cup, and still warm around the rim, the bottom was warm but not scalding.

Quantity: It looked very short in such a large cup, so I’m sure that it was a normal, or even a bit above normal espresso length.

Temperature: The espresso was at a perfect temperature, not hot, almost a bit tepid, but definitely controlled and good.

Volume/Consistency: Boy was I happy, it was silky silky. It wasn’t tarry, slipper with too much oil, nor sandy. It was almost like running a shot of Bailey’s in your mouth. It was great.

Crema: The crema had tons of room for examination, the cup was so large it looked like a puck of crema. It was shiny, buoyant in the center, had some signs of life in it, but not too oily. It was interesting how it’s somewhat generic character didn’t detract from the experience of the espresso itself.

Odor: There was a slight scent of warm coffee emanating from the cup. I was glad, it was very subtle, very faint, but it was there!

Taste: Hmm… It was nutty, buttery, no citrus, no berry tastes either, but rather, a warm chestnut like finish to it. The creaminess of the espresso made this very good. It was bitter, but that was towards the back end of the taste, and not right in the front of your mouth as you have the coffee.

Overall: Overall, it was a really great espresso. I was surprised, because it wasn’t oily, thick or substantial as I usually like the espressi to be. But it really pulled its own weight here and it was delightfully shot. It was one of the better espresso I’ve had in Rome in a long time! Bravo!!

The setup: Aha… a two, three or whatever step process. Whatever, it was all there. The espresso machine was an amazing digital La Cimbali M100, mama it is nice. And the temperature was at a cool 89 celcius! Bravo, yet again for thinking about the brew! The grinders were Rancilio and Faema, and the coffee… well I had to ask since there where no indications anywhere of what the coffee was. So after asking, they told me that the coffee they serve is the coffee roasted across the street at Black Diamond Bar Caffè e Torrefazione. I’ve reviewed this before and indeed, their coffee (even that which you take home) is very decent, one of the better ones I’ve tasted here in Rome. It is interesting that the sugars had the label of the Gruppo Valentini Roma (the website advertized on the sugar bags, which was an amalgamation of these three words, doesn’t work). They seem to be a series of cafes, all apparently serving very decent coffee!
