ERVIN BAR CAFFÈ, VIALE TRASTEVERE 198-200, 00153 ROMA

Rating: Standard, good Lavazza coffee

I originally noticed the Ervin Bar Caffè by sheer chance. I was walking on the other side of the Viale Trastevere (the more foot-friendly side) and saw a small red and green blinking bar sign. It is on a side next to a garage that works on cars, and simply on a very quiet and non-trafficked side of the Trastevere, right as it makes a right turn towards the more known and residential area. When I walked in it was quiet and the inside color mirrored that of the outside, a pale off white-egg shell color. Let’s see what the coffee is like.

Asking for a coffee at the bar got me this:

Presentation: Water was offered immediately. The cup was clean, delicate, thin (which I liked) and the Lavazza logo wasn’t kicking you in the face. It was almost imperceptible. Nice.

Temperature of Cup: The thin ceramic cup was warm, but not scalding. Good temperature.

Quantity: It was a solid espresso, good ounce, nothing more, nothing less. It wasn’t verbose and manageable.

Temperature: It was on the hot side, almost burnt my tongue – but didn’t.

Volume/Consistency: It wasn’t watery nor runny. It wasn’t silky, but rather a bit grainy and sandy. It was interesting and was more than I expected.

Crema: It was very dark, grainy like the consistency of the coffee, and thick. It stood there while I drank it and was rather oily-syrupy.

Odor: A very nice smell of dark-roasted coffee came from the cup, I was very happy at this point!

Taste: It was a good bitter but not rancid coffee. Its taste spectrum was not very complex, but it had a warm, nutty taste that was a fresh change from all the charred coffee I’ve been having lately here in Rome.

Overall: It was a good mid-range Lavazza experience. A lot better than a slew of other Roman cafes, simply because it was at a good temperature, oily-thick consistency and not rancid in any way. A great mid-range coffee!

The setup: It was nice, and the espresso machine I think really did a difference here. It was a Royal E-61 based three group espresso machine. The Fiorenzato grinder was very nice as well. The coffee, as I mentioned at the beginning, Lavazza. Not bad overall. The cafe itself is a resto-bar, so typical of Rome, and is very neatly tailored interior that’s not raunchy nor overly highfalutin.
