DO BRASIL BAR CAFFÈ, VIA SAN VITO 4A, 00185 ROMA

Rating: Standard, mid-range Coffee

As you pass the 3rd cent. AD Arc of Gallienus and head towards Santa Maria Maggiore, you come across an oasis for coffee, it seems. The Bar do Brasil seems dedicated to serving up a quality brew. In its interior you find crowded walls both with photos, things to sell and stuff. It’s a rather small locale, and its staff is very friendly. The place sees few tourists as it’s just off the beaten path and doesn’t advertise itself very loudly. Let’s see what’s going on with their coffee.

The first thing I saw when I walked in was the cash-register and the owner looking straight at me with a smile, so I went and pre-paid my coffee. This is what I got at the counter:

Presentation: It was the type of cup I’m coming to love, short, small and fluted upwards. Water was not given, but probably would have if I’d asked. The spoon was to size, and the logo con the cup looked a bit faded as if it’d been washed a few hundred times.

Temperature of Cup: It was good, I was happy, things were set to go.

Quantity: It was a very short short, and that was also on the mark, excellent so far.

Temperature: When I tried the espresso it was great, the temperature was not boiling, nor scalding.

Volume/Consistency: Argh, thin, very thin coffee. I was expecting a creamy shot of caffeine, but instead it was razor-like in its cut through the mouth.

Crema: It was light, sandy, thin and not persistent.

Odor: Nope, non here, yet again!

Taste: It was a mild affair. It was bitter of course, but not as much as I’d figured it’d be. It was definitely not rancid, but the taste spectrum was very reduced. It was straight dark-roast and nothing much else, no fruit, no nuts, no bells and whistles…

Overall: It had some very good components, but maybe the ‘materia prima’ that they were working with wasn’t that exciting. It was good, not objectionable, and repeatable. Straight mid range coffee.

The setup: Well.. can you find Waldo here? You have to look at the reflection on the mirror that’s on the column to see a ‘piece’ of the espresso machine…. By the shape of the group it looks like an Astoria espresso machine, grinder, probably the same. The coffee being roasted was a new one to me, it was Caffè Cavaliere this is a Bari-based coffee roaster that’s been around since the 70s it appears. It offers the standard ‘Roman’ styled varieties of Robusta-Arabica blends.
