Rating: Standard, Low-end Roman coffee
We’re still here at the Via Ostiense, next to the City of Rome’s government center, and still exploring the quality of cafes it affords. Like the other cafes, this area seems to me a bit abandoned and less taken care of than others. Maybe it’s because the street is really a broad two-lane avenue with tons of car traffic and little foot traffic, I don’t know, but whatever it is, it’s not inviting. In contrast, when you walk into this cafe, there’s a group of baristas that are good humored and people inside seemed to be boisterous and happy about things in general. The La CorNotteria Bar Caffè (don’t quite catch the word play other than the play with Cornetto and then Heart and Night) is a normal, working-class, simple bar.
Asking for a coffee got me this:
Presentation: There was no water offered, but I was given an eggy-like espresso placed in front of me. The cup was nice, the brand I generally like, and the spoon – the right size for this cup.
Temperature of Cup: It was good, warm, just as it should and not scalding.
Quantity: It was a short espresso, I like it already!
Temperature: It was good temperature, not bad and could start drinking it immediately without fear of getting burnt.
Volume/Consistency: Here was the first sign of the drink going south (except for the above-mentioned ‘eggy’ comment!), it was thin, runny, and sharp.
Crema: It was reminded me of scrambled eggs for some reason, maybe because of the way the crema clung for its life on the side of the cup, not sure. Either way it was thin, not persistent and not really oily.
Odor: Nope, not here, not today.
Taste: Well, what started like a nice cup of Joe, ended up bitter as hell. It’d been a while since I’ve had a coffee as bitter as this, but this was it! It wasn’t rancid, nope, but just starting to drink it I could feel it go directly to the hairs growing at light speed on my chest….
Overall: Yeah, it was bitter, burnt, and thin. Not really a pleasant experience, but it wasn’t rancid. I know this coffee brand is a whole way lot better than this, so this is just a low-end coffee experience here. What a pity.
The setup: They had a good work horse Astoria. There were three grinders, one a Mazzer Major that was broken and sitting on the side, then another Mazzer doing decaf, and on the right of the machine some rackety old grinder that I could’t make out the make of, but it was working – seemingly – a whole lot better than the Mazzer! The coffee being brewed was Gima Caffè, a local Roman roaster that usually gives good strong coffee.
