Rating: Standard, excellent Roman coffee
The Cafffè Camerino Magliana (that is, a different locale than the one that is down-town on Largo Arenula, in front of the Torre di Largo Argentina) was a super find. One of those that make me believe in Roman coffee actually being good after all! With so many positive reviews of Cafffè Camerino I was exceptionally disappointed when I had a few months ago at their flagship store, as it turned out to be simply crap in a cup. Yes, simple as that. But here it was different.
Asking for a coffee in the large and spacious locale (and quite full of people I might add) got the following placed on the counter:
Presentation: Water was served immediately and without even flinching to ask. This is great. It was busy and the three baristas manning the large bar didn’t give a hoot, they served water anyway. Cup was fluted, small, the style that I love.
Temperature of Cup: It was perfect. Very warm, not hot, not burning your fingers.
Quantity: Very short shot, condensed to what would be a ristretto in the US, but a good espresso here. Pure essence.
Temperature: Yes again, very good, on the upper end of the brewing spectrum, but not reaching it nor passing it.
Volume/Consistency: Silky, boy was I surprised at how smooth and sumptuous this shot was! It was great, it tended towards the sandy texture of grainy liquid but didn’t get there. It was thick and had body.
Crema: Brown, two-tone, had just a few bubbles. I was worried, but when I went into it, it was thick, chunky in not a bad way. It was actually very thick and extremely persistent.
It made me think of what Sant’ Eustachio must have been in its early days, with thick creamy crema that was ‘real’, not that added on junk they do today.
Odor: Unfortunately, it was muted, there was the smell of slightly dark-roasted beans, but I had to strain and it wasn’t really all there.
Taste: It was bitter allright, but with such a high oil profile, silkyness and no rancidness that it was simply a deeply strong coffee taste that was pervading my mouth.
Overall: Simply a great espresso, it wasn’t the best of all the Roman cafes, but it is definitely up there among those very few excellent coffees I’ve had, and by far the best in this neighborhood. If you’re here, you’ve gotta visit this place.
The setup: Spartan, but proof that what you really need is attention to the fine tuning what you’ve got and you can get stellar espresso. It was a four-group Wega espresso machine with what looked like an Astoria grinder. The coffee was what I’ve previously deemed crap, but this time it was amazing! It was Cafffè Camerino and it seems like a proper review of their coffee is in order after this experience.
