Rating: Standard, mid-range Roman coffee
The Mediterraneo Bar Caffè reminds me of a bazaar. One of those in Istanbul where you have a bit of everything, all in seeming chaos, but to the owner, it’s all perfectly in order. When you walk in you have chairs thrown left and right, slot machines apparently also slewed about here and there, and then at the deep right dark corner of the cafe, the coffee cave. There stands a really talk, later aged barista who’s accent makes you think he’s an Egyptian undertaker. The owner is a Chinese guy who’s And on top of this, you’ve got busy Italian radio talkstation blaring through the speakers. Quite a feast of people, hectic-ness and character. Outside and inside, there’s always a lot of people.
Asking for a coffee got this placed on the table:
Presentation: Nice cup! We have some touristy drawing on it, nice, fresh and happy. No water given, probably given if I had asked, but the barista had already gone away to talk to the owner about something. Lost my chance I guess… but the candy on the cup redeemed the guy. How sweet is this!?
Temperature of Cup: Warm, not scalding, was happy as the drawing on the cup.
Quantity: It was a rather large cup, voluminous, and so was the espresso, a good long espresso. Probably should have stopped the shot 2-3 seconds before.
Temperature: Good temperature, I was also glad. Deep in the coffee cave of the Mediterraneo Bar Caffè I was happy.
Volume/Consistency: But now, let’s see the real deal. It was unfortunately a very light light, thin espresso shot. Something was off with the tuning of the grinds to the coffee. What a pity.
Crema: It was uniform, no life in it, except to tell me that it was darkly roasted coffee. Shiny like the slot machine screens blaring their allure nearby. Almost thought I saw a sandy caky texture. But it was indeed persistent. That’s the coffee blend they were using.
Odor: Nope, not here fortunately!
Taste: It was very bitter as we know to expect, but it wasn’t rancid. It wasn’t over the top bitter. The thinness of the drink made the bitterness less forceful. It was a complacent drink.
Overall: It was decent, not offensive, and probably could have had another one without making hair grow on my chest nor give me a bad stomach ache. Mid-range Roman coffee, not remarkable, but not bad either.
The setup: It was nice, they had what looked like a great Faema E72 Ambassador series 4-group machine. They had a Nuova Simonelli grinder. And the coffee being served was Caffè Europa, a roaster close to Orvieto in the middle of Italy. Not bad, I’m curious to know why this bar chose this coffee?
Either way, I got a rather trashy feeling from the place. Not cared for. And this especially after going across the street to the XXL Bar Caffè, which admittedly had worse coffee, but who’s attention and atmosphere was so much more pleasant. Judge for yourself.
