IN CAFFÈ, PIAZZA SANTA MARIA LIBERATRICE 5, 00153 ROMA
Rating: Standard, Mid-Range Roman coffee
The In Caffè is by definition of its name, an ‘in’ place. No, couldn’t resist! The cafe is situated in a place where there’s lots of other cafes, in front of the Piazza St. Maria Liberatrice, in the heart of Testaccio. It’s also next to a theater and has lots of traffic. In fact, every time that I’ve passed by this place it’s always packed with people on its terrace. When I went it it had lots of younger people chilling and the barista was cool and courteous.

Asking for a coffee got me the following response:

Presentation: Water given when asked, it was served in a very large brandy cup which gave me about 10 times more liquid than the espresso itself. The cup was short, fluted and I liked it. It’s a version that I particularly enjoy, so we’re off to a good start.
Temperature of Cup: Warm, but not excessive. Good temperature.
Quantity: It was a short shot. Nice, concise and to the point.
Temperature: On throwing in the espresso into my mouth to savor the espresso it was just right, and not scalding.
Volume/Consistency: It was rather lightly silky, but easily slipping into the water range of consistency. Could have been thicker, creamier.
Crema: It was thick, persistent, held it’s own. Unfortunately it didn’t transfer into the consistency of the espresso.

Odor: Not present here either…
Taste: It was very bitter, spicy and tended towards the metallic at times. This last thing was an unpleasant surprise.

Overall: Excepting the weird metallic spicyness that I tasted, it was a solidly normal Roma espresso that leaned towards the lower end of the spectrum. It wasn’t poor, but not cleanly normal. It was a flat espresso without depth of taste or oiliness.
The setup: It was nice, I like Astorias and they had a nice Perla line three group espresso machine with an Astoria Grinder. The coffee being brewed up in this locale was the Roman-based roaster Gima Caffè. It is a stout full bodied coffee, no tones of different fruits or smells, but usually a thick concoction of caffeine.
