Rating: Standard, solidly good Tazza D’oro
This is a review of a cafe that, well… unless you’re a Banking executive visiting the Roman headquarters of the Banco di Roma Unicredit, you probably won’t just ‘stumble on it. The Gran Caffè Federici is in the EUR area, and definitely off the beaten path, yet it’s just down the street from the Italian Banking giant. And the recently renovated decor of the place shows it’s not a blue collar type of place. It’s got lots of light, rather large interior, and a staff that is super nice, courteous and welcoming. What a nice difference from some of the ultra-touristy places downtown!
Paying first and then coming up to the bar I got the following:
Presentation: Yup, you see it right. “I Love Coffee” is branded onto the cup. But hold on, let’s look at this cup better…
Yup, I must say I LIKE IT. It was nice, and it’s the first time I see this drawing on a cup. But if you paid attention to the picture above of the locale, you’ll notice what brand it’s from…
Yup again, it’s Tazza d’Oro. A brand I don’t particularly like, but this cup was cool, fun and the cup drawn on the “I love coffee” is the ‘Tazza d’Oro’ cup, so yes, as you drink the cup with your right hand, you’re letting folks know what coffee you’re drinking and you’re telling yourself that you love Tazza d’Oro. So yes, presentation was fun, novel, and yet no water was offered. Given the type of place, I’m sure they would have served it without a problem.
Temperature of Cup: It was spot on, light, warm, not scalding. We’re off to a better start than I imagined.
Quantity: Short shot, had to peek inside the cup to see what was going on. The cup was rather tall, but the espresso rather short, and this was great!
Temperature: Perfect temperature. Neither scalding, nor cold (which is a nice touch at times in order to really get the flavor of the coffee), but here it was spot on.
Volume/Consistency: It was light, thinnish silkyness, not heavy, not transparant. It was good. I wanted it to be thicker, but it wasn’t.
Crema: Thin again, not very persistent, some character as you can see below, which showed a decent extraction. Overall not bad.
Odor: Nope, non had as usual…
Taste: Very good, slightly bitter. No rancid tones, none there. It didn’t have a large range of flavors, nor room to explore the roast.
Overall: It was a balanced espresso. Strong but not heavy, bitter but not over the top. A light espresso, with a delicate consistency. Overall a good and solid Tazza D’Oro. I will add that it is ‘the’ best expression of Tazza D’Oro I’ve had so far in Rome. This is great! Given the high society this place is trying to cater to, I think that they’re doing a good job at educating the banking execs at what a decent espresso can be. After all, you can’t expect a financial analyst who’s managing millions of capital to be high strung on ultra powerful espressos, or can we?
The setup: They had a simple workhorse, a La Cimbali M22 with an Astoria grinder chipping away at the coffee beans. The espresso was the famous Roman roaster Tazza D’Oro. I’m amazed how a place like this out from the center of town can be brewing BETTER coffee than at the down-town flaghship store? Go figure, either way, I was a happy camper!
The interior has about 5-6 tables and you easily feel that you can lounge in there for a while on your laptop.
