LUNA BAR CAFFÈ, VIALE DEI COLLI PORTUNESI 322, 00151 ROMA

Rating: Standard, high-end Roman traditional coffee

I have to admit that approaching the Luna Bar Caffè was a bit off-putting, it had black champagne bottles all over the store front, and some people that looked like they were sporting an attitude having coffee outside. It felt like it would be yet another coffee shop that was aspiring to prove it’s Roman chic style via a white/black interior with lots of transparent plastic chairs and ugly chandeliers. Instead, in its interior I was met by a traditional ‘older gentleman’s’ appeal. Lots of dark wood interior, not like a British pub, but Roman styled 60s person classy bar. So I guess it’s a change of management. Who knows. The barista was a cool guy, so it was a great overall experience.

Asking for coffee in this establishment gave me this response:

Presentation: No water offered, but the barista was cool and surely had I asked, he would have obliged.

Temperature of Cup: Was very warm, wasn’t scalding, but quite warm. Good in fact.

Quantity: Mid-size, on the dot espresso- good.

Temperature: Good, right for tasting.

Volume/Consistency: Thickish, but on the watery side. Lighter, not creamy, nor sandy. Had something you could palpably chew on, but light.

Crema: Persistent, thick, had some texture that I liked. It looked really inviting!

Odor: Actually a dark roasted smell! I was happy!

Taste: This is the kicker, the taste was very very bitter, and actually bordering on the rancid side of it. Everything pointed to an excellent Roman coffee, except the most important thing.

Overall: Good coffee, on the ‘upper’ range of Roman coffee… Would love to have under my house. What would have made this spectacular would be a less rancid side of the coffee and a thicker extraction (probably remedied by a shorter expresso, no?).

Setup: They had a beautiful and modern San Remo machine, 3 group, with what looked like a La Cimbali grinder. Since the cup was not branded and there were no ‘brands’ on the sugar offered, I asked what coffee it was. The barista told me that it was the owner’s own mix. That they don’t sell the coffee but that it was a mix the guy himself did for the bar. So great, we have real preparation, in a traditional Roman style, of coffee. Simply cool.
