MONTE D’ORO CAFFÈ, PIAZZA MONTE D’ORO 94, 00186 ROMA
Rating: Standard, best Marziali coffee in Rome so far
The Caffè Monte d’Oro is in the Colonna neighborhood, right next to the Ara Pacis and Mausoleum of Augustus monuments. Its place in the Monte d’Oro piazza gives it good foot traffic, and to boot, its in a very trendy part of town. It’s got all the makings for serving up a good third-wave espresso. Yet, like 99.9% of all establishments here in Rome, it stays local and traditional. Let’s see how this adds up.

Asking for coffee got me this:

Presentation: It was busy when I asked for the coffee and no water was offered. Yet, I don’t know if they would have charged me for water or not as it IS in the touristy part of town… But the cup was clean, smallish and stout design. I was happy.
Temperature of Cup: Very hot cup, but cooled down rather quickly.
Quantity: It was a good short shot, on the spot.
Temperature: While the cup cooled down quickly, the espresso was on the rather hot side. I was able to drink it but still brewed a bit high.
Volume/Consistency: Good thick espresso, had body and I could taste it in my mouth as something with consistency and body.
Crema: Lightish crema, persistent, some oil, but rather light.

Halfway down the shot it showed some character, see below:

Odor: Dark roasted yet very very light perfume of coffee.
Taste: Very bitter, just like I would expect from this brand, but it was not rancid.

Overall: Once I got halfway through this espresso, it became a lot better. The taste improved and the consistency. I would say that this is the best version of Marziali coffee that I’ve tasted in Rome. And I have the feeling that with some more attention, this brand can squirt out even better espressos!
The setup: They had a Wega E61 based three-group espresso machine that was simple and fit for some creamy espressos and a Mazzer grinder.

The coffee being brewed, of course, was Marziali Caffè, a Roman-based roaster.
