Rating: Standard, Lower-end Roman coffee
The Twin Café along the Colli Portuensi is a bustling place. There’s plenty of shade on the outside, and lots of people populating it’s space. The interior is quite small, and the barista is a serious kind of guy with no bells, whistles or frills. The interior is a mix of blue and orange decor, with lots of slot machines and other things you might want out of a ‘pseudo 7-Eleven’ store.
Asking for a coffee got me this:
Presentation: The coffee was served without water, but the cup was clean, crisp, and everything in order. While you can’t see it on the photo, the counter was a dark blue sparkly corian/marble type of material that made the contrast with the cup really great.
Temperature of Cup: Way too hot, extremely hot!
Quantity: The espresso shot was good and short. this was great.
Temperature: By the time I had it, it was at a good temperature where I could taste the coffee properly.
Volume/Consistency: Not thick, yet not watery. It had some body, I was glad.
Crema: It was light in color, uniform, no striping nor deep oils, yet also persistent.
Odor: None, and now, I don’t expect it out of a ‘Roman’ coffee…
Taste: The coffee was very bitter, bordering on rancid. Yet towards the end, it was oily and this gave it some body.
Overall: I give this a lower-end Roman coffee rating simply because it wasn’t very flavorful and the oilyness was boarding on rancid. The strong points were the consistency it had that it wasn’t watery.
The setup: The had a Nuova Simonelli three group espresso machine and grinder. It was a setup for good espressos.
The coffee being served is Bondolfi Boncaffè. This is a local Roman roaster that seems to be celebrating its 160 years of existence. I’m yet to taste its best iteration.
