SCIAPÒ CAFFÈ STREET & RESTAURANT, VIA DEI GENOVESI 1, 00153 ROMA

Rating: Standard, very good Roman coffee

The Sciapò Caffè Street & Restaurant is one of those rare places in Trastevere that while catering to tourists, it is still full of hospitality, charm, and quality. It’s on the East side of the Viale Trastevere, so by definition it receives a lot less foot traffic. Whatever, I was glad to run into a place that is touristy, yet accommodating and not a rip-off. It offers a lot of other things besides coffee, but let’s concentrate on this for now.

Asking for a cup got me the following:

Presentation: Water served immediately, the glass was rather large. The coffee cup had a fun logo on it, a clean thinnish white porcelain and rather large.

Temperature of Cup: The cup was good, it wasn’t boiling hot, so I was happy.

Quantity: In the rather large cup the size of the shot was OK. It was just right in fact.

Temperature: Good temperature, I was starting to be happy. This isn’t your typical touristy crap.

Volume/Consistency: It was silky, thick, and creamy. I was very glad!

Crema: It had texture, it was not ultra thick, but neither razor thin. It was dark and marbled, and looked promising.

Odor: Dark roasted coffee smell. Not too strong, but actually present.

Taste: This was a flavorful, thick, and deeply strong coffee. It was bitter but nowhere rancid, and while had a small taste gamut, it was good.

Overall: I was very happy. Given that this is a tourist hotspot, the quality of coffee was great, and extremely rewarding! Very much worth stopping by and relaxing here with a cup of java.

The setup: They had a nice LaCimbali espresso machine and what looks like Mazzor Major grinder. A setup that’s honed in for good consistent quality shots.

The coffee being served was Caffè Braccio, this is a rather recent and young roaster (1998) located in the Casalotti (north West) neighborhood of Rome. From this example, I’d say it’s a rather good Roman coffee, worth seeking out and trying.
