CAMÙ BAR CAFFÈ, PIAZZA SANTA MARIA LIBERATRICE 20, 00153 ROMA

Rating: Poor, low-quality coffee

The Camù Bar Caffè is a small hole in the wall. It’s in the Testaccio neighborhood and thus, by definition, has some charm to it. I was glad to see it, and to get a chance to peek into its interior. Once inside, I was privy to an argument about some damned politician who was, as usual here in this part of the world, doing some dirty business to earn extra cash. The yelling between the two baristas and the client was nice, it had a good jolly rhythm to it. Especially with the TV blaring the same crap just as loud as them from the rear of the locale. Coffee? What the hell is that for?

Asking for a cup of this black/brown crud got this reaction:

Presentation: No water offered, probably given if asked, wouldn’t have helped the verdict anyway, so I see why they don’t bother. The pause to make my espresso, seemed to calm down the barista a bit. So who knows if this argument/discussion wasn’t going on, if my espresso would have been better!

Temperature of Cup: Super hot cup, what else to expect from a rough-n-ready Roman coffee joint?

Quantity: Short shot, this is also a sign of toughness, no?

Temperature: Too hot, yeah, for people who care to taste their drink.

Volume/Consistency: Watery, runny, no oils, just dead coffee beans.

Crema: It was dark, which is good in my book, and a probably on the 3 mm thick side, which I also like, but it wasn’t oily, nor didn’t show any character.

Odor: Except for the humidity from the interior of the bar, none had.

Taste: Extra bitter, bad and quite rancid aftertaste.

Overall: While I was able to finish it, it was such a poor coffee experience that I have to qualify this as simply ‘poor’, low-end coffee, just like the politics of Rome…

The setup: They had one of my favorite brands of coffee machines, an Astoria three group machine and an Astoria grinder. They were also squirting out Tintori Caffè which, as we know from other cafes that serve this reviewed here, is a decent coffee. Packing a lot of punch, but also very thick and oily. So? This place is up for a retraining to get its espresso back up to par with what the coffee brand can deliver.
