Review: Poor, very bitter scalding coffee
There seems to be some coordination among the cafes surrounding the American Academy in Rome and the American University of Rome. They all tend to serve lower-end poor versions of Roman coffee. Let’s see what the Bar Caffè Fratelli Grisci does to its brew. The place is quite nice inside, very traditional Roman cafe bar. Always dressed up in seasonal things (Easter, Christmas, etc), and people working there are nice enough.
Here’s what you get when you order a coffee:
Presentation: No water offered, but given to others when they asked. Somebody actually joked with the barista about this! I guess when you have relationship with the barista, you can see when they’re off to a poor start of the day. Cup was clean, quite large espresso cup.
Temperature of Cup: Here’s the first bad point, the cup was extremely hot, too hot to put to the lips, and almost too hot to hold by the little handle.
Quantity: It was a rather long espresso for me. The cup is big, and it was filled just below the halfway mark.
Temperature: Surprisingly, the espresso itself was not too hot. It was at an OK temperature, maybe because I waited quite a bit for the cup to cool down.
Volume/Consistency: Oh yeah- super watery, almost filter coffee taste! The shot was poured out indeed – way way – too long.
Crema: It was very thin, light color- reflecting the length of extraction- and not persistent.
Odor: Yes, again! Hits the spot with that very burnt smell characteristic of over-roasted old beans. Great!
Taste: Well here’s the interesting point, it was not rancid, but rather heavy on the burnt charcoal side of the gamut. I can’t say it was pleasant either.
Overall: So after a very very bitter experience, which I add, was not rancid, I really can’t say this is a good ‘Roman espresso’. This is poor because it simply wasn’t pleasant to drink.
The setup: They serve Danesi Caffè which is a north Roman roaster, and is served in tons of different locals. The brand is big and as you can see, this bar even uses a Danesi branded E61-based espresso machine. It should be pouring out a lot better espressos than this. The grinder looked to be a Mazzer.
So what’s the deal then? Why are all the bars clustered around these American institutions serving such bad coffee? Not sure, but its probably more to the taste of this area of Gianicolense/Monteverde than anything else. Either way, this place is pleasant inside, and quaint. Just for that it would be nice to spend some moments on a rainy day having breakfast or afternoon coffee there.
