Rating: Standard, good Traditional Roman coffee
The Bar del Quartiere Caffè is an interesting place. It is right next to the cafe ‘Il Tuo Bar’ which I mentioned had a less than decent coffee. The Quartiere cafe is very spartan, there’s little decorations, it is clean, but looks a bit cold, clinical, and well, not too inviting. It simply has almost no decor in it. However, there’s always lots of people sitting outside and inhabiting its hospital like interior. Let’s find out why.
Asking for an espresso gets you this:
Presentation: A nice rounded cup, clean, with the Gran Caffè Santos logo on it. We’re getting nice Roman quality here. Water served automatically, without asking. This is a great start.
Temperature of Cup: Continues to be good – the temperature of the cup was on the spot, not hot, not cold, just right. It came righ off the top of the machine, so this is a good sign.
Quantity: Another nice touch, the cup was big, the espresso shot small. It was a good size shot.
Temperature: Hmmm… a bit hot, but not scalding. It was a good shot.
Volume/Consistency: Here’s the nice part, it was silky. The first sips, because of the crema were silky, in the middle a bit watery, and of course in the end silkier. It was a good shot!
Crema: The crema was very thin, but even. It wasn’t extra dark, nor extra light, it was overall a good shot. I don’t think the beans gave much more than this.
Odor: There was the general lack of strong coffee smell, it was very subtle, but what I did pick up was the dark roast of Santos coffee.
Taste: They key to the quality of this espresso is the shortness of the shot. It was good and made for a decent experience.
Overall: I would say this is a very good representative of traditional Roman coffee. When I asked for the espresso, the barista groundedthe beans on the moment and made the shot for me. I think this place serves some good coffee! Now I can see why so many people hang around in this bar instead of the nice looking neighbor!
The setup: They had a nice, no frills Milano-based Grimac two-group espresso machine, with a matching grinder. It is a great setup, and as we can see, it was tuned to the grinds. And since Gran Caffè Santos was served, this means it is a real traditional local Roman coffee here in Monteverde.
A nice thing of this bar was the couple running it, they were very friendly, nice and of course, seemed to know what a good espresso was. This is a winning combo.
